1955 Olds Super 88 Convertible CreamSalmon KissimmeeAuction012014
Olds was certainly in the forefront of the style revolution of 1955! There was a bit of a foretaste of it in their senior models of the year before, but this daring (for the ...
It looks very nicely preserved and/or restored. I keep seeing a strap of
some sort looped around the steering column on these auction cars. I'm not
sure if I saw on this one that it was also looped through the keys in the
ignition. Is that what it is for, keeping the keys with the car? I haven't
visited many auctions myself but when I have, I've not seen that technique
used. The keys are always elsewhere. Maybe auction goers in the UK are less
trustworthy! I would not have thought it hard to cut or break that strap if
someone wanted to cause a problem by stealing the keys.
Hey, Mick! I'd say that was exactly the purpose of these "plastic ties"...I haven't heard of a problem..I imagine it would be a real problem if the keys "disappeared" when it came time to cross the auction block. I often see directions about how to start the car! Thanks! :) Jack
As usual you always do a great job. But I wish you would have mentioned
about the round display in the front underneath the Hoodorderment. I don't
know if it was or not but it look like a picture of the earth. You know 1
side of the globe. I think there was one in the back as well. Anyway keep
up the good work I'm a big fan.
That's true...the view of this side of the planet fit quite well into Oldsmobile's Rocket and space travel theme. I suppose the idea was this would be the view of the earth that the lucky Olds driver would have as he or she rocketed into outer space, thanks to the Olds Rocket V8! There was a similar emblem on the deck lid. Thanks for the kind words! :) Jack
Does the $41 K mean that was the last bid or is it the reserve price? Any
way if this was a 55 Chevy rag-top in this condition it probably would be a
fair chunk more. Looks super sharp with the correct wheel covers, white
walls and salmon color. Salmon? Really? Jack, you're just going to have to
come with a better name than that. :P
Hey, Chester! I'm not sure about that...I think that is where the bidding left off, but that's just a guess. No question that a '55 Chevy always seems to bring more money.Terry has settled the color question...coral! Thanks! :) Jack
This gorgeous beauty is dressed in, if I'm deciphering a 1955 paint chart
correctly, Oldsmobile's 'Polar White' and 'Coral' making for quite a
striking combination! I like the way the designers 'floated' the Oldsmobile
name in the grillwork and with a nod to both the engine name and the times,
what else could be used for a hood ornament but a rocket. With a 122"
wheelbase, the brilliantly done two-tone pattern accented with just a bit
of chrome, takes the eye from front to back without a pause to end with
afterburner inspired taillight pods. Very, very nicely done interior, the
steering wheel alone is a work of art! A beautiful example of 1950's design
making for quite the highway head turner! IMO, a set of chrome wire
wheels wrapped with beefy raised black letter tires would add just the
right aftermarket touch. GREAT car, thanks Jack!!
Hey, Terry! Thanks for those color names! You really have the feeling that the stylists were in charge of this car, both the exterior and interior. I think they really were dedicated to create a thing of beauty! Wire wheels really would update it! Thanks! :) Jack
One of my favorite things about old cars is the dashes! The chrome, the
gauge layout etc That to me, since that's what you seen when you were
driving, is what gave these cars a edge over the Now stuff.
Great Vid Thanks Duane
Hey, Duane! That's very true...the dash was an integral part of the styling of the car! For so many of the cars of this period, the focus seemed to be on a control center replete with gauges and chrome, designed with a balance: instruments to the left, clock and radio speaker to the right. Very neat! Thanks! :) Jack
