all sphagnum moss. rocks for drainage at the very bottom. The trick is when
you collect your cuttings and plant them. You can do it in the spring, but
you have to monitor their moisture during the dryer months if you don't put
plastic over them... and even then, you have to keep an eye. In the fall I
find it easier because of the constant moisture and even in the winter,
with the snow then melting and snow again they are constantly rejuvenated.
any other tips on the maples. not a whole lot found on rooting maples and
there is some nice verities around my neighborhood. There is a green
Japaneses maple that is probably 15 feet tall with really small leafs which
is just beautiful and would make for a great bonsai. tried some cuttings in
the spring but all of them die beside one that i actually dug up that was a
sapling.
Really enjoyed spending some time with you... that is what your vlogs feel
like to me. Seeing all the things sprout and the amazing sites you happen
to find or be around for. That maple seed rain was awesome. The Hine-ster
seems like he is definitely calming down a bit... which is good. I was out
walking today and thought of you and still trying to keep you company in my
own way in your loss. much love to you myk
Something eats little holes in my Hosta, people tell me its slugs, but I
don`t see any, or the silvery trails they leave. Do you have any idea what
I could use to remedy this ? The seed shower was pretty cool ! I sometimes
find little skulls similar to that, but bigger, I thought they might be
squirels. Its supposed to cool off a little, for the weekend here, I`m not
ready for 90% yet.
@doghaven1 They're not calming down, they're just hot. I'm started getting
him on the carpet, which is pretty easy because it's just a wrestling
match. You sent me searching both for recipes and to make sure they weren't
toxic to the dogs (Red Maple would be). They're supposed to taste between
peas and hominy, although they also say bitter and I have a low tolerance
for bitter.
@RobWillieJesse I haven't tried taking a frame from a video but the stills
I've taken with the camcorder haven't been that good. My still camera does
better, it's an easy shot to get (I was actually going for some stock
footage for some other ideas). I already have an 8x10 of her as a puppy,
and then that turned into a water color and a wood burning.
a flea beetle? never heard of it. i'll have to google it now! .. =) .. wow
mike, that maple seed shower was awesome! i've never seen dogs eat them
before! that was kinda cool! .. =D .. and that tiny little skull was soooo
cool! .. =D .. it's amazing how well eveything is coming along in your
backyard. can't wait to see the iris bloom! ~ hugs, katie
When you were showing the maple seeds, it reminded me of swarm of locust. I
got attacked by a swarm of locust when I helped Jim do some landscaping in
the Florida Keys. They heard me using the weed whacker and came a running.
:P Trixie and Heinrich should think that they are in heaven with all of
those maple seeds. :P
@HeyThatsHolly I'd like to nuke the whole garden to at least cut down on
the flea beetles but I'm guessing that would kill off enough good bugs I'd
end up with worse. I thought winter would stop Trixie from wanting to be
outside all the time, it didn't. Maybe summer heat will.
@MsChopperdog Once I started spraying poison for the fruit I'd have no
problems spraying non-edibles (besides that slugs and snails can be taken
care of pretty easy with "organic" products like insecticidal soap). I'm
not ready for 90° either. I hate the heat.
@lastcallbeam Smoking them out of what? I've got some old hippie equipment
left I could try but I'm not going to use one of my good tobacco pipes. :)
I have no idea how to do that. I have some big fires on the garden and it
hasn't ever cut them down.
@oopspaw Flea beetles are evil. I can't believe something so small can do
so much damage. The placement of the skull near by tree was a little
unnerving, so far they haven't tried to eat any of my trees over winter, I
hope they don't start.
Those flea beetles would drive me crazy. Wow, what a cool swarm of seeds!
Neat skull, Alex would have had a fit over it! Glad to see the dogs aren't
fighting all of the time now, so cute eating the seeds! Feel better :)
