And in modern times, does the queen or king of England have any real kind of impact on political affairs? Seen from an American perspective, the queen seems a figurehead. For example, she can't even comment on Scotland, and she appears each year at the opening of parliament, I think it is, and reads a list of the laws that they are hoping to pass, given to her, as I understand it, by the politicians. (I do feel sorry for her having to wear that very heavy crown during the proceedings while trailing a long, heavy robe. It shows the stamina she has at her age.) The royal family appear at many charity events and causes, but do they serve any other purpose? That's a real question. Any answers from UK people would be appreciated. As an American, I don't understand the queen's function, other than to uphold tradition, which includes a lot of pomp and circumstance--the robes, the powdered wigs, the Cinderella carriage--fascinating for an American to watch, but like something out of a fairy tale.
