Kankkunen because he kept on winning from 86 to the late 90s...Makinen
bacause of winning 4 titles in row and against thw WRC spec
cars....Gronholm because i remember him very good....and Vatanen because of
his recovery and aibility to get driving superbly after that crash...
In those Years at the arrival there wasn't written FINISH, but FINNISH!
Holy Flying Finnish, they'll be always remembered. Henry drifts in the
clouds of the sky . . .
I suspect this to have been a knee-jerk reaction to a problem that if
thought about and acted on could have been dealt with. We never had deaths
in Finland, England, Sweden, The British rounds running all the Group B
cars had no deaths. This was a problem in mediteranian countries where
crowd control was near invisible. Finland used kilometers of ropes and
patrols with dogs), England, marshalls who would cancel stages if crowds
misbehaved etc etc. The authorities just could not be bothered
Group B rally cars were banned in 1986 after a series of driver/navigator
and spectator deaths. The final straw was Lancia driver Henri Toivonen and
navigator Sergio Cresto in a fiery crash in Corsica. Remember these cars
were FAST..."Toivonen is often reported to have tested his Delta S4 at the
Estoril circuit and to have set a fastest lap time that would have
qualified him in sixth position at the 1986 Portuguese Grand Prix." So we
are talking equivalent Formula 1 performance here BRUTAL
I know ive posted the same message everywhere but need all to know in
2004/5/6? (cannot remember) a metro 6r4 (probably the slowest of the Groub
B Cars) came 8th despite going off backwards at 80mph, and set some fastest
stage times in Ireland Overal against the WRC cars (at the hands of Colin
McRae RIP) just goes to show that a well driven S1/T16/S4 could possibly
still win rallies over 20 years later against modern technology.
Youre quite right, and this is why they (FISA) said they would ban the
cars, but i suspect it was more to do with FISA's insistance that GP be the
premier motor sport. They could have limited Group B cars to 300HP and
tightened the stages. The 1987 Group A cars were more dangerous than the
1986 Broup b cars and indeed there were deaths in Portugal again, Italy,
Africa, and deaths in local rallies in the same year (1987)
i've come to the conclusion that rally videos are some of the best on
youtube. great stuff! even finished with the flag. =) also, some of the
most impressive rally footage i've ever seen in this video.... scary too!
those people on the track, only just getting out of the way in time! i'd be
too conscious of them being there if i was driving, i'd have difficulty
focusing on the road.
Audi is too busy making sportscars now. Though the R8 is an amazing car, it
even has quattro, I'd rather see Audi get back into rally. Audi and Porsche
used to dominate rallies, Lancia too. Now they've got fords and peugots...
like those names mean performance. I think it'd be awesome if they could
somehow recreate the feel of Group B and the older rallies in general.
if youre curious about how group b was banned, from the wrc if you didnt
know this, do some research. actually, just search Rally Portugal "86 and
the tragedy". The drivers said the crash wasnt due to the car, more to the
uncontrollable crowds of portugal. although i think the lanci that crashed
had some sort of problem with the transmission, but i dont know
exaclty what i said, they are just as fast through tight stages because of
the way they put power down, a 550hp S1 from the 80's just could not find
grip, Groub b cars have in the past turned boost pressure down on slippery
stages for a quicker time, also group b car engines were very peaky and
torque was either on or off, if you see what i mean
Well it is spelled QUATTRO and from your question it sounds like you might
be thinking that quattro is a type of car but what it is, is it means all
wheel drive and AUDI is still making quattro's today. You may have heard of
an A4 for example you can get one 2 wheel drive or quattro. Hope that
answers your question.
All Group B cars were banned in 1987. Deemed to dangerous. If I remember
correctly 2 drivers and 3 fans died. I could be wrong tho so don't quote
me. Audi and Ford pulled out in 1987, were as the rest of the teams
finished up the last races of the Group B. They earned the nickname "Killer
Bs" for that reason.
I believe it to be approx 17 genuine s1 around although there are a few
more that started life as UR Quattros and have been convert. I dont know
how many long wheel base rally cars are still around. There are many lwb
road cars still around in various condtions. Hope this helps
I must say that you are terribly wrong... (or you are prefering miles) but
those things accelerated 0-100km/h (0-60miles) in less than 3-seconds on
gravel. And as you can see from the video they are really going flat -on so
the speeds are between 120-200km/h
:22 he wasn't shifting... see that pedal on the far left? FAIL. He was
alternating braking and gas to control his car through a turn. There is a
video on here where colin mcrae explains left foot braking techniques if
you wanna be edumacated.
Your Worng Dude cuz these slides wont happen under 120kmh. And don't forget
that the Quattro system is 1 of the best power distributing systems till
this day... losing traction & these slides wont happen at low speeds.
Defo the greatist rally cars of all time!! They will never be matched for
raw power and excitment and the drivers were the best of the best!! i love
these cars and go to see them being driven wen ever i can.
the soulhd make new one's like a A3 rs quatro turbo ore maybee a r8 rs V10
TDI rally :D first diesel rally car ;) but i don't think it wouldn't be
good for rally cars but how now's think about the torque :D
but the op was right in saying they are limited to 300 hp to keep the
speeds down. if you have a 550 hp car its going to be faster then a 300 hp
car. in the more open stages anyway
close? Audi S1: about 500hp (veeery careful estimate by audi, they were
rumored to have up to almost 800hp) Subaru WRC, Mitsubishi WRC: about 250
hp whats close about that....
Umm, Subaru WRX STi and the Mitsubishi Evolution are both pretty close to
Group B, especially in WRC. And the spectators are RIGHT there on the side
still.
BushX - Machine Head man - that is maybe the greatest rally montage I've
ever seen. I have goosebumps; I friggen love the old-school Audi rally
cars. Sim
even a scirocco, golf or polo with the running gear. someone official may
say the VAG group does rally under seat and scoda but its not the same. at
all.
