12 years old when this game was played. Can't believe the Vikings have
never been back to the Super Bowl. We expected them to go every year when I
was a kid. Yeah, we were spoiled. Rams had so many great players on offense
and defense in the 70s, but they never had the QB and the Vikes and Cowboys
took turns victimizing them.
+mel bias If memory serves, there were a couple of big kickers in years past, namely Lou Groza of Cleveland , and Lou Michaels of the Baltimore Colts, and yes, Jerry Kramer of Green Bay..
I too was 13 & a big fan of Vikings. Been suffering ever since. SB loss to Raiders, Darren Nelson 4th dwn TD dropped pass vs Redskins in playoffs, long Steve Young scramble, long Mike Vick scramble in OT, Gary Anderson sets NFL record for 100% FG's during season only to miss a chip shot vs. Falcons in playoffs, Favre int. in '09 NFC Champ. game, etc etc etc, so on & so forth. Plenty more heartache but not enough time or space to get into it.
If Chuck Knox would have had the balls to run it in instead of trying a
field goal on 4th and goal from the half yard line in the 1st quarter, the
Rams would have probably had a 7-0 lead and at the very least had the
Vikings pinned way, way back.
James Harris should have started this game, should have been the
quarterback. Pat Haden was TERRIBLE. It's a shame racism denied the Rams of
being in the Super Bowl.
Chuck Knox was quoted as saying 'I think James Harris should have been one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history'/ No one makes a comment like that about an average quarterback! James Harris was the 'OVERWHELMING' choice amongst the players. He was threatened by people just because he was black! Same thing with Joe Gilliam. How can anyone play their best under those conditions??? And with the racism from within the front office, I can see why both Harris and Gilliam did not play long.
+michael swanson --There is a book, written by Chuck Knox, which confirms the vote at a party held by Carol Rosenbloom. He did mention that was made to feel very uncomfortable There's also a book written by Pat Haden, pretty unbiased, about the 1976 Ram season, which demonstrates the difficulties of all three QBs in establishing one true starter . Harris was never an over whelming pick, by anyone, though. Haden lasted through 1978, and replaced because of injury by Ferragamo. Jaworski eventually had some success with Philadelphia. Harris was decent, but not consistent, and never great.I won't delve into Gilliam too much, only to say that he had too many off-the field problems, and he did't appear to be the answer, either, for the Steelers. I'd take Harris over Gilliam, though, any day..
Listen Archie Bunker, I am about to rip you a new racist asshole and prove once and for all just how PATHETIC, IGNORANT and RACIST you truly are!! Now, it was one Skip Bayless, who was a staff writer with the Los Angeles Times, who is quoted with saying that Rosenbloom 'favored' Pat Haden because of his blueblood upbringing and 'Hollywood' looks, i.e. white. And, it was the coach himself, Chuck Knox, who mentioned the fact that, at a dinner party Rosenbloom threw at his home, he, Rosenbloom, had everyone at the party 'vote' on who they wanted the starting QB to be at the start of 1976??? According to Knox, both he and his own wife were the only ones who 'voted' for James Harris!!! So, you stupid RACIST BITCH, don't ever question my facts and knowledge!!! And all of this is mentiond in an sory from ESPN News from January 21, 2014 called 'All Hell broke loose' by Steve Wulf, an ESPN writer!!!!! Now, as for your silly 'stats', I can name 10 guys from the 1970's alone who had the same type of numbers that both Harris and Gilliam had!! Did you know Terry Bradshaw's comp. PCT. from 1974?? It was 47.9!! And, Bradshaw threw more ints from 1972-74 than TD'S!!! So what are you saying?? And if both of these guys were that bad as you ignorantly suggest, then how were they starting in the freakin' NFL???? And it seems YOU are the one that knows NOTHING, because James Harris WAS starting for Buffalo in his ROOKIE year of 1969, but he suffered a groin injury in the very first game against the Jets! And he played for 2 more seasons, so he was not a sorry bum as you make him out to be!! Do some fucking REAL research JACKASS before trying to make ME look bad!!! RACIST ASS-CLOWN!!
+michael swanson Wow, a documentary. Yeah, those are always 100% truthful and accurate. Do you have him on tape saying that? Of course you don't, because it most likely never happened. As usual, you have no answers to the obvious problem with your theory. If Rosenbloom was so against Harris being his QB, why did Harris start the '74 and '75 NFC title games, and and even better question would be, why would Rosenbloom sign a black QB if he was so "racist" to begin with? In fact, Harris was so bad at QB in Buffalo, that he wasn't even in the league in 1972. He was terrible in Buffalo, but that team was terrible also ,so if anything, it seems like Rosenbloom gave him a chance when nobody else would. And for the record, here is Joe Gilliam's career stats :Completions 147Attempts 331% comp. 44.4%TD's 9Interceptions 17QB rating 53.2Gilliam was given the starting job in Pittsburgh and not only was he terrible, he was late for practices, didn't know the playbook, and was a dope fiend. So stop embarrassing yourself telling us how great Harris and Gilliam were, you just look like an idiot, which I'm guessing, is something you're used to. And the whole calling everyone racist really has gotten old and out of fashion. Makes you look pathetic. Have some dignity son and try to learn how to conduct yourself like an adult.
You are just an IGNORANT, RANTING RACIST ASSHOLE!!! LOL!!! You're right, Robert Griffin is NOT that good, but both James Harris AND Joe Gilliam were, and they both just came along too early, when people with your IGNORANT mentality ruled the landscape!! Racist like you don't want to believe the truth, because that means you have to admit to your own ignorance. The Carroll Rosenbloom quote is in the freakin' documentary you DUMB, PATHETIC ASS-DICK!!!
+michael swanson Documented by a sportswriter who heard it at a party? That's funny. What reporter, and for who's "autobiography"? Because if a sportswriter writes something for some players book, it has to be true, right? Simple fact is, Rosenbloom was an owner for a long time, and he didn't seem to have a "problem" with Harris being the starting QB for the Rams in their 1974 playoff game vs. Washington, and even though he went 8 out of 24 for only 95 yards, he started and played the very next week in the NFC title game. The next season, Harris was the starter, but hurt his shoulder mid season. Even though Jaworski led the Rams to a playoff win over the Cardinals in 1975, Harris regained the starting job the next week in the 1975 title game because Knox said a "QB doesn't lose his job because of injury". Harris threw an interception on his first pass, a wounded duck on his second, and got a quick hook. So you want us to believe that Caroll Rosenbloom, who had no problem with James Harris starting in the 1974 and 1975 NFC title games suddenly has a problem with a black QB in 1976? Did he attend a Klan meeting or a Eugenics seminar in '76 that changed his philosophy? Bottom line, Harris was never a great QB, and after he hurt his shoulder, he was even worse. Sure, Haden stunk too, but that's life in the NFL. Do you want us to believe Robert Griffin III is a victim of racism too? He was a Pro-Bowl QB just 3 years ago and one of the biggest stars in the league. He hurt his knee, and now he's on the bench. 40 years from now, someone will write a blog talking about what a shame that Dan Snyder told the coach not to start a black QB because Griffin was so great and was a victim of racism. And those old enough to remember the tragic demise of his promising skills will know the truth.
+jack brandt You are only showing just how much of an ignorant, RACIST boob you really are! LOL!!! I'd rather slip on one piece of grammar than to be a ridiculous asshole like yourself who makes pathetic, Archie Bunker-like statements and think you're making sense?? Actually, I am well over 50 years old, so I very well remember and know of which it is I am talking about here. And no, I did not attend 'public school', which debunks another of your RACIST stereotypes. And the man's name was JOE Gilliam, not Jim dumb-ass, and yes, RACISM did play a big part in his departure from Pittsburgh, because RACIST ass-holes like yourself calling themselves fans did not want him starting over the blonde, blue-eyed Bradshaw. It is well documented in the Documentary on Gilliam. Why don't you WATCH it and learn the TRUTH instead of spouting your racist, ignorant rants. And the reason he did go to doing drugs was because of IGNORANT assholes like yourself!!
+Alys Falsia You stupid piece of shit, it was DOCUMENTED in an autobiography on Carroll Rosenbloom by a sportswriter in L.A. who was there when Carroll made the remark at a private party given before the 1976 season!! I don't have 'to know' Carroll Rosenbloom you dumb fuck, because I deal in truth and you obviously do not. And the Rams did not have to have an overly dynamic QB to make it to the Super Bowl because they were a defense and run oriented team, but Harris WAS the better of the three, and because he was BLACK was the reason he was kept from being the starting QB. Deal with the fucking TRUTH and stop making up bullshit lies and asinine statements, because I am TELLING IT LIKE IT IS!!!
+michael swanson "who do know neither"? Maybe instead of teaching you all that socialist diversity nonsense, they should have been teaching you grammar. Funniest thing is, while I'm actually old enough to have watched Harris play often on TV (even live once), I'll lay 8/5 you weren't even born yet. Just another sad example of our government schools pathetic indoctrination. Next you'll be telling us Art Rooney/Chuck Noll was racist for playing Terry Bradshaw over Jim Gilliam. Never mind that Gilliam was actually given a chance at the starting job but preferred shooting heroin over playing pro football so he lost the job.
The Rams won nothing with Harris! And you dont know Carrol Rosenbloom so to make that your argument nor do you know that as a fact! So talk about idiot comments you jackass. Second if your argument had any merit and if racism was a factor then why not start Hayden all season? Also while Harris did have acceptional moments and an all pro season overall he was not that great! And he was terrible at certain points of that season. That is why his career died shortly thereafter. The Rams had no problem with a Black QB leading the team before Haden and proves how stupid your assertion really is! Telling it like it is ? Not quite!
Harris was great one week, and awful the next. Haden and Jaworski weren't any better, but none of them really could have been the answer. The 1974 Rams made the playoffs, but they were the lowest scoring playoff team ( less than 20 pts/game). Only a thrashing of the Falcons very late in the season brought the offensive numbers to semi-respectable levels. To be fair, Harris was hit with untimely injuries, but he truly wasn't the long-term answer.
+jack brandt You sound like the babbling idiots who do know neither the truth or the real story behind anything. And your racists sarcasm only makes you sound even more pathetic. I am not even wasting my knowledge on you!!
+Alys Falsia If you were 'telling it like it is', then you would know that Pat Haden was chosen over Harris by Carroll Roesnbloom, the Rams owner, because Haden fit the look of the 'blond haired, blue-eyed Hollywood-type' who could win fans over, not because he was a good quarterback, which he was not, James Harris was not a mediocre quarterback. The man led the league in passing and made All-pro for Christ-sake!! How is that mediocre??? The fact is that people at that time did not want to see a black man in a position of leadership, no matter how good he was!! Ron Jaworski, and I remember because I grew up then, was 'mediocre' also. All he had was a strong arm, he was in-accurate and inconsistent. So, if you want to 'tell it like it is', get yopur facts straight, because that is what I deal in, not stupid, dim-witted opinions.
+michael swanson You liberal idiots think racism plays a part in everything. The Rams used Haden, Harris, and Jaworski all through the year. Harris got his chance to be the starter but after getting shut out vs. the 49ers and losing to the Bengals in 2 of his 3 last starts, he lost the job. Nobody made that much money back then, including the coaches, so they wanted that Super Bowl bonus money as much as they wanted a ring, and they would pick whoever they thought would get them there. Fact is, Haden and Harris were both very mediocre QB's and they probably had their best chance with Jaworski.
+MassVt I don't know about that. I mean, he was consistent enough to be an All-Pro QB, and place in the top 5 in passing in 1974. If anyone was 'inconsistent', It was Pat Haden, who was hyped up as the golden-boy out of USC, why I don't know, because he couldn't even throw across the street! But you are right about the Rams being a run-oriented team then. I mean, Knox was called 'Ground Chuck', so that should tell you something. I am surprised Harold Jackson put up the numbers he did then!
+michael swanson --Harris wasn't very consistent. He certainly had his moments, but he was somewhat unpredictable. The Rams style of play almost negated the QB position, as they preferred the strong running game and a tough defense, although they had good receivers in Harold Jackson and Ron Jessie.
1975 NFC Championship Dallas at LA Rams 1st qtr pt 3
+Jay Foulk ...Staubach was a gutsy player, but to imply that the modern day football player lacks heart is a bit absurd...your statement defies the nature of the sport...
jaworski would have had a great career with the rams. the rams always had a
very good team in the 70's and 80's. with philly the team was being built
when he got there and it took a while for them to compete year after year.
+Walkoff 2 I believe 5 players graduate this year including 2 starters and the 6th man, but like @alaskanathlete said they have a great core to build around. Before Kamaka and Travis were freshman they played with the club team here in Barrow which I think played a big part in their success. They're used to playing with the group that'll be coming up so I think we can expect big things from these young men. Im excited!
#1, Kevin Goodwin will be back for another year, but #10 Antonio Dunbar is a senior and #30 Sione Tuai is also a senior. So, they are going to need to rebuild in the 3 and 4 spots, but I don't doubt that they have some talent coming up stream, and with a core of Kamaka and Travis to work with...they are already a contender to repeat!!!

Popular does not necessarily equal something being more of a sport. Otherwise League of Legends (a video game online) can be considered more of a sport than basketball.Besides, I like soccer. I do. But assholes like yourself make me wonder why. Why would I want to associate myself with fans who kill each other in South America over the game? Why would I want to associate with elitists who are so pretentiously obnoxious that they can't be taken seriously?Oh, and it's called a football because the ball is 12 inches long. No other ball is like that.On the other hand, a lot of games involve kicking balls. Shouldn't we be insulting the name that your sport came up with?By the way England has been trash ever since. The Green Bay Packers, on the other hand, have been very, very good.
+mate spark Hmmm hand egg? Let me search that up, nothing came up man, can you explain a little more? Excuse me euro can you pleas refrain that again because last time i checked this is called Football being the ball being 1 foot long. Lol its funny when eruos are angry.
+MassVt Of course, it's all speculation. But, the season after the Rams traded him, he led the NFL in completions, passing yards, and touchdown passes, while playing on a pretty bad Eagles team. He also was voted to the Pro Bowl, and won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
+Venom101002 Quite possible, although Roman's arm was starting to fail him by 74 or so; Hadl did very well in 73, and Harris was pretty good in 74, but not outstanding. Rams just relied on McCutcheon, Bertelsen and Cappelletti, with occasional throws to Jackson, Snow and Jessie..
How did we survive back then without the scoreboard box that all the games
have now in the upper left hand corner? Back then, it was like, "What is
the damn score? Give the damn score!" Nonetheless, Brent Musberger has
witnessed up close so much sports history!
+Michael Lubin Rams probably should have won, but the hole they dug for themselves was just too deep. Vikings didn't play all that well, but they made 4-5 great plays that turned the game in their favor..
+MassVt Knox's disappointment is very understandable, because with fewer mistakes the Rams really could have won this game. This Rams team was probably a good deal better than the one that later lost the Super Bowl to the Steelers.
Merlin Olsen last game if you are able to watch the highlight film from NFL
films the very end when the game is over there's a great shot that hot of a
Rams teammate consoling him I'm a Vikings fan but I also like Chuck Knox
and this was the toughest lost I think in his coaching career they have
gained the Vikings but the kicking game cost him 11 points I would like to
see NOx breakthrough once
+Ben Kuxhouse -It must have been tough for him to play out the last minute or two, after Foreman's run made it virtually impossible for the Rams to win, I do recall him kneeling in frustration near the end..
I forgot how powerful the LA Rams. Pat Haden looked good. The vikings were
great but I feel like the better team did not win. I would have loved
seeing the Rams play in the big game in 1976
+Steve Zimmerman I think that was the last NFC championship game for Bud Grant if memory serves. Jerry Burns team lost to the Redskins, Denny Green teams lost to the Falcons and NY Giants, Brad Childress team lost to the Saints.Sad thing is the Vikings should have won the Falcons and Saints games. The Falcons game was lost due to typical Denny Green 'prevent defense' and horrible offensive play calling especially at the end of 1st half. The Saints game? I don't blame Childress or the officiating nearly as much as I blame the players for just beating themselves. The Redskins game? They came SOOO close to beating the Redskins. That year they just barely made the playoffs but upset and trounced both the Saints and 49ers.
+6400az -According to Bud Grant, they used Miller more because he thought that they might have to throw a bit more ( a tacit acknowledgement that the Vikes wouldn't be able to run on LA--he was right)..
