Just a question, I would like someone who has flown airplanes to answer this one. As an aspiring pilot myself, I want to know whether in the cockpit, the audio quality is any better because I am having trouble understanding what they are saying without the subs... Is this only because it's a transcript and the original signal the pilots actually hear is better than what is here?

It seems so strange that in todays technologic advances, that communication systems still let you 'walk over' others speaking at the same time. Just like back in the days of CB radios!

+Jim H aircraft radios transmit AM specifically so that people will be able to tell that two transmitters interfered with each other. The way FM works, the stronger signal will "capture" the receiver and be heard, and the weaker signal will be lost with nobody being the wiser.

I think being able to talk clearly as an air traffic controller is more important than being able to spout out everything quickly. Half the time they're acting like these planes are breathing down each other's necks with no time to spare. Saying something as simple as the take off clearance could have been done much more clearly and with only a fraction of a second of time wasted.

+Nick Akers I said this in a comment on a YT clip about Boston John flirting with the ladies, and some people going on about how he shouldn't be using non-standard phrases... but if anything, his articulation is among the best I've heard in any ATC clips. I don't care if he tosses in a "hasta la vista" or something like that, he makes damn sure he is understood, and that is what counts.

Does Midway really need to do crossing departures? Of course if everyone does their job correctly, there's no problem. Makes the delays at Newark and it's parallel's seem worth it.

Are there any plans in the future to make ATC radio communications digital for higher fidelity audio so that pilots/tower doesn't have to deal with garbled sound and cutoffs?
