15:55 - Shame on the producers for stating that "In Thailand not all women are forced into the sex trade....Thousands enter it by choice" . This suggests that cultural brain washing, intimidation, and browbeating - of a child who then later goes into prostitution - is the same as "choice". Saying this invalidates the 'trap' that 1000's of girls are coerced into by family members, neighbors, and enticing third parties. . . The problem is that most of these documentary makers never spend enough time to crack the veneer of Thai/ foreign culture. While a few highly visible red light districts gain much attention, the majority of prostitution is oriented towards Thai men, and north Asian men who go to more discretely presented hotels, bars, and massage parlors. This has been going on in Thailand, as the main crossroads of SEA, for centuries. Western people only became aware of problems here after the Vietnam war era when some men unashamedly broke protocol and took prostitution public. The fact is that hundreds of thousands of girl are cultured their whole youth to "repay" their family for their actual 'birth' and parenting. Understanding Thai, one can hear (some) Thai mother's tell their daughters, "I went through the pain of childbirth, the toil of feeding you... You must repay the family somehow." Many 'suggest' to their daughter that she should find a rich husband or go to get a 'job' in the city. Of course this is a euphemism to save face from the truth - many poor families now seek gains through the exploitation income of their daughter's prostitution. Neighbors, rather than reacting with outrage at the treatment of their communities youth, turn away, either stating that it is not their problem, or worse, joining in these distortions of traditional Thai culture. . . In traditional Thai culture, daughters were to marry a man known and approved of by the family, and then join the husband's family to care for the home and raise children, partaking in family work and needs. Life was humble overall, yet quite culturally successful in that Thailand is the only SEA country to avoid the brunt of major calamities, upheavals, and wars of the 20th century. The society did well, grew, and created a hard earned providence of food and broad basis of trade. The majority of the rural families had a stable life. . . With the advent of mass communication over the last 30 years, prostitution has increased. Without the education to understand proportionally what is happening to girls who are pushed into prostitution, news of one girl's successful marriage to a rich man drowns out that fact that far more end up being physically assaulted, abused, impregnated and deserted, infected with HIV, trapped and enslaved by the men who target them. Families in Thai villages generally gain more respect when they have more gold to show, phones, nice clothing, and of course big items such as a car or home. . . Traditional cultural means (farming, simple business) cannot provide the ability to gain so much as the people are exposed to through modern media/marketing. . . Where a family by good work would have made small gains in the past, and the respect that comes with it, they must now go beyond their means to to keep up with some neighbors. The people here are not at all in a survival situation like some are in Africa or even rural China. Thailand is proportionally the most food abundant country in the world and has no pattern of severe weather. Basic survival is not an issue. Yet social survival is considered a paramount issue in Thailand, and respect (or face) based upon a show of material wealth is a primary means to this. With a lack of education, families understand it to be worthwhile to push their daughter into prostitution (however veiled they are in admitting this). So many, many Thai girls are taught from the youngest ages ( 4 and 5 years old all the way until their early teen years) that they should "do anything to repay and help" their family. The families threaten, browbeat, cojole and sometimes literally sell their girls to then go work in 'restaurants' from where they are to send money back home every month or to find a husband from a place (brothel) about which they never speak. These girls, so compelled from the time they were children, never have a chance to gain an understanding of the consequences. This happens right now, today, 2014. Anyone who spends enough time to go past the veneer can have conversation with professionals in law, medicine, education who understand the magnitude of a growing tragedy of exploitation. The girls are so insulated in an exploitative culture that they never have a chance to learn that the vast majority of Thai girls involved in prostitution never achieve the happy marriage or normal healthy life. At best they may find an elderly man to whom they marry and hope to gain an inheritance from. They then would no longer 'marriageable' in Thai culture and lack the chance to meet a husband to build a family and proper life together with. Worse, many end up meeting men who offer false promises and take them abroad where they are trapped, abused, and enslaved. The majority carry on for a decade or more going in out out of prostitution and failed relationships with men who never intended to fulfill empty promises. Years pass with girls becoming women only having learned hopelessness and to ply themselves into a horrific lottery where nightly they take drugs, suffer alcoholism and just survive in a never ending nightmare. People may be confused on the surface by a girl who smiles, but this smile means less than that of a prisoner who laughs to pass away his sentence. Even honest expressions of happiness have been stolen from them, as they are taught to wear smiles as a mask to the means of prostituting. Millions of Thai girls and women never had a chance to learn the consequences of what "helping their family" would mean, nor, through all their teen and 20s to learn much of anything that is of constructive use to building a family , career, or healthy life. Yet, most of us from the developed nations do know... We who have had generations through which to build understanding of consequences and that how we treat our children the vulnerable leads to how our culture will go. The producers of these types of documentaries understand consequences as well. Superficially labeling the plight of Thais who have been compelled into prostitution from their youngest years is grossly irresponsible and actually adds to the problem - in part supporting the myth that this is "ok". Many girls suffer the most brutal of circumstances - being entrapped into circumstances where they are raped and trapped physically into prostitution, drug use, debt. The rest were forced under the duress of family menace and cultural intimidation too overwhelming to escape. They never had a choice in what they do, but we have a choice to understand it.
