I once saw an ABC News (U.S.) program that explained why so many of their surviving broadcasts, as late as 1973, were in black and white: Because that's how they recorded station breaks, otherwise they taped over the broadcasts, not thinking anyone would want to see them decades later. The Madison Square Garden Network likes to demonstrate this with a broadcast of a New York Rangers hockey game from 1975, which ends, and after a flash goes to one they played in 1972, recorded on the same tape.

@chesneyincognito You are so right. One of the problems back then is that finals of the lesser Euro comps were not always shown live, so do not live in everyone's memory. I think that this final got highlights coverage and no more, either later in the evening and/or the following Sunday's Big Match programme. Some Euro finals clashed with domestic matches, for example Man City's Cup Winners Cup final victory took place the same night that Chelsea beat Leeds United in the FA Cup Final replay.

@davidgbarron True, but there were still lots of black and white broadcasts going on for various reasons in the early 70s. For a number of months in season 1970-71, The Big Match reverted to black and white after one season of colour due to a technicians strike. Also there are a number of games broadcast by the BBC at this time that were covered simultaneously in both B&W (BBC1) and Colour (BBC2 test broadcasts).

Nice post! You are right about Brian Moore although I suspect he screamed during the last goal just so he could be heard amongst the noise! The common consensus among Arsenal fans that were there that night was that it was probably the greatest match in terms of atmosphere at Highbury. Not so much of a library that night! ;-)

Hahaha, "Stupid name for a competition"...so true. What does that even mean? Bummer UEFA doesn't recognize the Fairs Cup titles as legitimate, meaning we only have one Cup Winners' Cup in our trophy cabinet to show for all our European efforts. That needs to change.

Wonderful!!! Aged 8, my first season following the Arsenal, I was there that night with my dad. We usually stood on the Clock End (6 shillngs(30p)) but we had seats (30 shillings (£1.50) each) in the lower tier of the East Stand for this one. Thanks for posting.

The one thing I cannot work out is why this game survives in black and white. Colour Television was already up and running in the London ITV area for several months.

If ALL and ONLY Black countries in 1965 opened their borders and let hundreds of millions of non-Blacks into their countries, and then 90 years later, Blacks are expected to be minorities in the countries that let non-Blacks in; that’s not done by accident.
