I decided to make a video talking about speech therapy, in response to questions from dritta and other viewers. Thank you so much for your views and support, ...
I had that same conference in high school. Big table...all your teachers
there looking at you differently now that they know you have a
"problem"..like I'm not just Ashlee, I'm the disabled Ashlee.....hated
it...felt like it was a pitty party for myself. I didn't particularly care
for me speech therapist in HS either..she always pulled me out of class at
the worst times..hellooo we have tests to prepare for, notes to take.
Spanish sucksssss...I have to take 4 years of it for my degree :(
lol are you talking about the passive airflow technique? it is the
technique that works but with it you have 1000 ways to stutter and only 1
to speak fluently and for that you need to put all the pieces together. It
is hard technique to master (yes you need to master it, not to learn it)
and it takes time but people who master it become better speakers than most
non-stutterers. I guess your teacher wasn't the master of his craft with it
since he stuttered.
Since I have been exploring and seeing different people, especially young
people like yourself sharing their experiences on you tube, I'm thinking I
want to do something about it. Videos starting up soon with some answers
for you and others that share the same struggle. PWS don't need a speech
therapist to teach them how to speak. You know perfectly well how to speak.
You have a great nice voice and your fluency is awesome, except when you
interfere with it.
Hey Majetn, Speech therapy sucked because....speech therapists pretty much
suck. They don't have the first clue what to do. I am an old fart (55) and
have just found out what this stupid disorder is about. The cause....and
therefore the road to recovery. If you watch yourself..you only stutter
when you try not to stutter. Therapy is pretty much always about taking
more conscious control over the process. (Dumb idea) There lies the problem
in the first place!
Furthermore, in closing, you, like the vast majority of us....PWS are
smarter than the average person. All those asses that have annoyed you or
made fun of you, or taken away an opportunity. Yeah....you get the picture,
they don't deserve to feel superior to you, or us. They behave the way they
because of their stupidity. George Carlin once said, "Think of how stupid
the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than
that" LoL!
I was in speech therapy since the age of 10, and it did help me alittle
like saying words slowly and "sliding" them in so if it was colour it would
say ccccccolure trying to like ease the c out. Also learned to take a beath
like what you said and it helped me. I still stutter and I do keep at it
when I do stutter, I try to keep eye contact but can't always. But I would
say it helps you to tune down the stutter. xD
yeah, I had speech therapy when I was really little and in 5th grade. I
DREADED going in 5th grade, I would do anything to get out of it. when I
was younger I would b me put in remedial reading classes cuz the teachers
didn't think I could read. I just was soo shy and wouldn't read out loud. I
could read Soooo much better than those kids.
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with speech therapy. I took speech
therapy as a kid (about 4 or 5 years old) because my stutter was very
severe. It's pretty mild now, but I had a very good speech therapist. I'm
studying now to become a speech therapist & specialize with people who
stutter :)
I'm sorry you had to deal with that. You sound wonderful. I'm in school to
be an SLP right now and I'm glad to see your side of the story. I think
it's hard for us to transition from young kids to order teens and adults. I
will keep your story in mind whenever I greet older students
Thanks. That's kind of what I figure, that schools just gonna suck a little
bit for now, but afterwards it'll get better, mostly because I won't be
forced to give presentations and get graded on how well I can talk. And I
don't plan to get a job in public speaking. :-D
I stuttered when I was in high school it has gotten better over the years.
But it does happen when I'm stressed. Hang in there high school will be
done soon. It will help you in life but your talking fine now. I was so
nervous to stutter in front of people.
Way to keep it real. Your story about the meeting at school made me laugh,
because I work in a school and I can totally see that happening. And it
helps me to work on not repeating the same mistakes they made!
I think speech therapists dealing with stutterers should be required to
actually have a stutter themselves. How else will they be able to help
someone if they don't have to deal with it?
