In 2014, over 40,000 medical graduates who passed licensing exams applied for residencies. There were 25,900 first year positions. Over 14,000 medical school graduates did not obtain a residency position. In 2014, over 1300 first year U.S. medical school graduates (MD &DO) did not obtain residencies. Another 1000 previous U.S. medical school graduates also failed to obtain a residency. Over 5,000 U.S. citizens and permanent residents that received training overseas also failed to obtain a residency. An additional 6000 foreign citizens that receives training abroad failed to find a residency as well. The 50% chance of obtaining a residency for U.S. citizens who attend medical school abroad counts those who obtained at least one interview. Overall the chances are much lower at obtaining a residency for U.S. students that chose to go overseas.
