Part 2 of 3. Getting Into Medical School: Insider Info. Black Men in White Coats Episode 2
Part 2 of 3. Dr. Brenda Armstrong, Dean of Medical School Admissions at Duke University Medical School, continues her discussion with Dr. Cedric Bright, UNC ...
I wish people could be more clear on the lack of residency positions. Dr.
Brenda Armstrong at 11:44 vastly understates the shortage of residency
positions. In 2014, over 40,000 medical graduates who passed licensing
exams applied for residencies. There were 25,900 first year positions. Over
14,000 medical school graduates did not obtain a residency position. In
2014, over 1300 first year U.S. medical school graduates (MD &DO) did not
obtain residencies. Another 1000 previous U.S. medical school graduates
also failed to obtain a residency. Over 5,000 U.S. citizens and permanent
residents that received training overseas also failed to obtain a
residency. An additional 6000 foreign citizens that receives training
abroad failed to find a residency as well. The 50% chance of obtaining a
residency for U.S. citizens who attend medical school abroad counts those
who obtained at least one interview. Overall the chances are much lower at
obtaining a residency for U.S. students that chose to go overseas.
