Ya know, this seems to be an unfair contradiction considering it involves
Adam Sandler, but I will point out that Jay made the exact opposite
argument for 80s nostalgia and how sick of it he is in the Pixels review.
Here he is, celebrating it whole-heartedly in Turbo Kid.
+Marcelo Zuniga Don't really think that's a contradiction. Watch Turbo Kid and you'll understand why Jay felt differently about it than he did Pixels. It wasn't the 80s nostalgia that Jay was "celebrating". It was the movie that existed beyond that. I recently saw Turbo Kid. It was a genuine movie, like the people who made it actually gave a shit about what they were making . Which is very rare these days. I'm not kidding when I say it made me tear up at the end. The 80s nostalgia was really only the style. It wasn't the whole movie. That's the important distinction. So I agree with Jay when he says the "references" are subtle enough to not be tiring, since I didn't notice any direct references to anything while watching. Turbo Kid, as a movie, didn't DEPEND on its 80s nostalgia to be entertaining. Pixels, on the other hand, is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of Turbo Kid. It's a movie that absolutely depends on referencing 80s nostalgia. "Hey guys, remember Pacman?!" Take away the references and there's NOTHING left to talk about. Jesus Christ. Its the most blatantly cynical thing I've ever seen in my fucking life! I mean, outside of a Transformers movie.
+spideysnooch I thought of the French chldren's novel "The Little Prince," after the girl died and said the boy would remember her, as he does his parents, when he looked at the stars. This is a major theme in that novel, and it doesn't surprise me they went there in the film since the major actress in the film is Quebecois.
signs is really good if you look at the aliens as demons and the little
girl as an angel... they actually call her an angel, it's not a difficult
thing to see, but nobody who sees that movie seems to make the connection
+SirGeeeO sadly they are not demons, they are aliens, the girl is not an angel, is a girl, and the movie is not good, is a mess of nonsense and pretentiousness
