Poor John Carradine! Yanno, he was in so many of these low budget deals
that this actual conversation occurred between two young low-budget
filmmakers:
"Say, do you know of any name actor I could stick into my movie? I could
use some box office insurance."
" Well, actually, believe it or not, I just finished a thing with John
Carradine and he owes me a day. I could let you have him."
"Oh no thanks! I don't want John Carradine--he'll give my picture that
'cheap look'."
True story. In fairness to Mr. Carradine, he was always professional,
great at what he did, and always a welcome presence in any movie, big or
small.
He is still one of my Fave Actors. The Video Cellar has his version of Blue Beard and you should check it out. They did a great restoration of this Public Domain film. :)
+Michael Klein I love John Carradine and there is no shame in doing it for the money. Hitchcock made Waltzes in Vienna with Jesse Matthews simply because he needed the money. John Caradine was great in all he did and these 'Thrillers' which he did for Karlof and was turned into a Hog that was killed was a great part for him. He is jusst great!
Yeah, and Roger had NO BUDGET or expertise in anthropoid physiognomy to call upon to make a monkey suit. He had to bounce a check to get the camera they filmed it with...
