So that's what BJJ looks like? How is that different to Judo proper? And it
looks "exactly" the same as Kosen Judo!
I'm assuming you won but I couldn't tell because as soon as you had Juji
Gatame on you let go of it!?!
+kigawman I practice what I can of Kosen Judo and incorporated a couple of moves when I go to ground when I get thrown with Jujutsu - I can pick up the moves from the vids, but, not all of the intricacies. For me, the style is fascinating, I could watch it all day. But as a sport for the Olympics the throwing has to be the primary focus as i want it to stay televised. Otherwise the audience will see people rolling around on the ground think it is boring and switch off, or even worse, not take up the art. I remember the first time I saw Royce Gracie staying on the ground for a match against Sakuraba I thought to myself is that even a martial art it was a horrible advertisement. You see I don't really do Judo, there is a great number of Judo moves in our syllabus, some newaza and there is a number of Aikido moves as well, but my primary art is Jujutsu (you know not the Brazilian one) and Toyama Ryu Iaido. I would probably switch to Judo if there was a school nearby and Kosen in a second.
+Vaughan MacEganMay I remind you that criticizing Kosen Judo is already criticizing what was originally established by the Kodokan! If you're one of those individuals who greatly advocate 1925 Judo, then your establishment of 130+ years of the sport's history is damaged!!You have to understand that part of the reason why Kosen Judo is on the rise of bringing newaza as an integral part of Judo is due to the fact that the (current) Kodokan had neglected this aspect of the art. Shihan Kano has tried its efforts to bury the advance aspects of newaza by creating a streamlined version of Judo. This is why we now have two styles: pre-1925/traditional style Judo, and 1925/Contemporary Kodokan/IJF-style Judo.If you think seeing too much newaza is boring, then I suggest you should watch more Kosen Judo videos here in YouTube to find out. If you still find it boring, then you've basically ignored the sport as a whole.
+kigawman I don't exactly understand what you are saying. If you are saying that Judo needs to allow more time for newaza, thus, more time on the ground then this is begrudgingly occurring. Their has been reports of some tournaments allowing this to occur which I applaud, however, I really appreciate the throwing aspect of Judo so I don't want it to go too much the other way and have all events been settled on the ground. I don't want it slipping too much into Kosen (or BJJ). Seeing too much of that would be boring.
+Vaughan MacEgan Judo should be doing this! If you scan YouTube, Tokai Sagami, the high-school dojo where Naohisa Takato trains, they do, no-gi newaza. That's one of the reasons he has cauliflower ears. I don't understand why the whole IJF and Judo community likes being passive when the ones coming out are the people trying to branch the sport in better ways. Kudos for Matt D'aquino doing this.
+BeyondGrappling Oh right, it took a couple of watches but I eventually saw it :) I've never seen anyone tap out that quickly! But then again I've never been in that situation with an Olympian before :P
