+Tahoe_Mike Aaaaaaaah, the salesmanagerof this floating coffin reacts!!!! Now you are there, could please stop spoiling the internet. newspapers, etc with these shitty commercialsof this so called "luxerious" ferries.
Terrifying incident; Bridge crew made major mistake by not turning ship
into the wind when squall started. Instead of being on bridge the Captain
was eating at Tamarind. Ship tilted at least 14 degrees until captain ran
to bridge and took many minutes to righten ship. Crew and passengers hurt;
lots of broken glass, chairs overboard, and water inside everywhere.
We were dining on 2nd deck and as ship tilted we though the sea would come
through the windows and we would drown- It was that close. Dining room
staff had NO training or ability to display critical thinking and NO
officers showed up to help in dining room. Staff said they had never been
in such an incident.
With modern navigational equipment and up to the minute weather info how
could such a mistake occur??? Ironically watching BBC News a few hours
before, they mentioned squalls in our area.
The ship tilting was navigational error, not act of nature.
Many people traumatized and some may have PTSD.
Bridge crew and Captain should be held accountable. No apology from Holland
America- Maybe they are worried about liability. They say "Your safety is
our first priority". Not in this incident. A few minutes more and the ship
could have capsized.
If not already done, this incident should be reported to NTSB.
+xmrrushxSwearing off going on a cruise ship though is silly. I can understand being traumatized, but to avoid such a silly, super unlikely danger is just irrational no matter how you look at it. If you had a fender bender, are you going to never drive again?
+kommisar I agree on those stats... However having gone through the same event as him. If you have clue why your fighting gravity. There is some reasonable level of panic. So before you go bashing someone check yourself. I lived it, I didn't panic (as you can see in my video) but that's because I knew exactly what was going on.... and I know it took the Titanic a cpl of hours to sink too, that info always helps.
+xmrrushxThat was very informativeThe water was definitely covering the windows on deck 2. That is the vision I can't get out of my head :) This was my first (and last) cruise
+Dan Boris I'm not defending the crews actions but just looking at the whole incident more objective. I was in the main dinning room as well on the 3rd floor, above you. I would have liked the video from that deck as i'm sure the water was at if not covering those windows. That squall, if you look at the Satellite images from that day and time period, formed quite rapidly. In the course of an hour it was partly cloudy and then turned into a full on squall. Ranga's Rule! to answer your question about "spinning a huge ship". You must think of the ship and its 11 floors as a huge sail, or wall. Any amount of a strong wind will cause the ship to list to the opposite side that the wind is blowing. I feel we were lucky in the fact that a couple of events transpired which prevented this to being worse than it was.1.) The squall and winds hit us more in the Aft than Port side of the ship. Had it hit perpendicular to us I'm sure we would have broke the 25 degree threshold (the point as told by the Queen Elisabeth Assistant Capt we take on water) 2.) Our ship has a Modern Propulsion system, or Azipod system. This system allows the propulsion to articulate 360 degrees. In other words instead of the ship turning with a rudder, they use the props to turn so you don't get as bad a list when turning. We Also had bow thrusters which you may have noticed when we pulled in and out of ports.3.) While our Capt was enjoying his surf and turn, the Queen Elisabeth Assistant Capt praised our Capt on how well and quickly he corrected the incident. As for the crew, especially the dinning crew. Most even the seasoned ones have never been in an incident such as the one we experienced. On our floor some did their best to keep the plates and what not from falling, others were planted to the starboard windows with fear/amazement. I will say within 20 mins they had cleaned up and we were being served our deserts. Also friend of ours were on the 5th deck with kids in their stateroom and were assisted by the gentlemen who cleaned our stateroom. We did catch up with our Capt on the final day for us in Venice. We pondered if they would release the security footage from that day. He gave a prompt No. I am surprised as how little this has made it to the internet. I'm assuming because 90% of the passengers were well into their 60-70's and not well connected to smart phones such as the younger generation.
+Dan Boris Well I had PTSD I can tell you that and I still cant get that image out of my head of that wall of water from the Manhattan windows but I do feel better about it now. I agree with you it has to be an error with the navigational equipment
+Dan Boris I still don't understand how a squall could spin a huge ship like that and to be fair the Captain is allowed to have dinner and he did have a second in charge. I think it was either human error or something went wrong with the navigation equipment. I am Australian, we don't sue, but full disclosure from the company would be appreciated.
We were in the Tamarind that night. People were screaming, glass everywhere
and it felt like we were going to keep tipping. I heard people were putting
on life jackets down below. I have some video as well with the captain
stating we were only at 7 degrees but others had said they heard it went as
far as 20. Either way it's a night my wife and I wont forget. Thank you for
posting this. Looking forward to seeing xmrrushx's video as well.
+Ken Hendsbee A friend of ours ended up on a flight with The Assistant Capt to the Queen Victoria, he had said we hit 19'. He also praised our Capt for correcting the ship quickly and "saving our lives". I think what most people forget is that cruise ships don't sink in 30 seconds. It took the Titanic 2hrs and 40 mins to sink.
word from the queen Victoria capt says we went 17 - 19 degrees and at 25
degrees We would have taken on water. I have the video from the Main
Dinning room and I'm going to post when I get back to the states.
+Ranga's Rule! I Still haven't gotten to it yet as i took the video on my wife's phone. I was in the 3rd floor main dinning room and started recording 30 seconds before the Capt came over the PA system. You can see in my video that we still had a list going and the rough seas as i was near the Aft windows of the dinning room. For me to this day, i didn't think much of the incident. 20 - 15 mins prior to the focal point of the list, i had already seen the squall incoming from the Aft windows. Being a weather enthusiast i knew what was going to transpire, and had my eyes fixed to the Aft and starboard windows (as i watched a horizon im used to seeing disappear) . I feel a lot of people panicked because they had no idea what was going on or didn't feel that the ship wasn't in a critical point of danger.
