You won't be able to make a jump ring out of 31 gauge wire. It's too thin to hold anything. Even if you were to solder it, it would lose it's shape. I wouldn't use wire less than 24 gauge, and even that would only be for very delicate work.

Hi, I havea question, what is the gauge of this wire? I am trying to do jump rings with 31 Gauge Wire and it opens very easily. Do i have to solder it?? any ideas??

I would recommend using a glue on or crimping end like the ones designed for beading chain. They have a loop on the end that you can attach to the clasp.

Thanks for the info. I have 1 X 1.4 mm chain so non of the normal jump rings will go through :( do you know what can i use to connect it to the clasp?

I recently made a necklace and the jump ring that attaches one side of the clasp allows the clasp to slip off. Not sure why I cant get it to completely close.

Do the first split ring pliers (the one with the kinked tip) work for the really small jump rings, like the 2mm?

Suzanne, Great question! For some things, I find this opener much easier--particularly for *opening* jump rings quickly! For more delicate projects, pliers are easier to use because the pliers can reach the jump rings in tight areas. Like if I were attaching several things on one jump ring, then there isn't much of the jump ring's surface for the opener to use and that's where pliers come in handy. I like to have both, but this opener isn't a necessity, but rather something nice to have!

Do you really find this more effective than using two pliers? BTW I adore your videos--you are teaching me how to make jewelry and really grow in a hobby I have discovered I love. Thank you!
