If singers today sang like this, you people would be all over them criticizing every last hemidemisemiquaver. One can only hope that Patti in her prime sounded better than this.

+Zack216216 I read she received $5000 in gold per performance. Even now she sounds - I do not have words - there is something in her voice, that you want to listen and listen. Thank you.

+Zack216216 You think it's a train wreck, it represents a vestige from the greatest singing actress ever recorded.  A reminder.  This Patti horror is but a mere shell, a glimmer of what was written about.  No one in their right mind could prefer this quavery antique to anything that Callas ever did including just clearing her throat

My dear, we all heard Callas's 1964-1965 Norma... It was a train wreck... Now, imagine what Callas at age 63, singing into a gramophone horn in 1906 would sound like... There are restored versions on my channel of Patti singing, whilst not representing her whole voice, they are a much better representation than this particular recording.

+Zack216216 I mean sang like THIS!  Scratchy, tinny, like she was in a horn, which she was.  Antediluvian recordings like this cannot give someone who never heard her live ANY idea of what she sounded like.  Undoubtedly a great singer but on this record she sounds like a frightened macaw.  And how dare you say she sounded better than Callas!  You deceive yourself.  You are hearing what you want to hear.

What do you mean.... " Sang LIKE THIS??"  Do you even know what you are saying>? Although she did not sing Norma on stage, Patti is a direct link in a chain leading back directly to Bellini. She studied it with Maurice Strakosch, accompanist to Giuditta Pasta, who created Norma; the embellishments she employs in the second verse are almost certainly those of Giulietta Pasta..  Patti was loved by Verdi, whom considered her the greatest singer he ever heard.... Rossini wrote parts in his operas for her.... All of her colleges  hailed her as the reigning Queen of Song... Melba said she would give up her career to hear Patti sing, Tetrazzini worshiped her... Eames loved her.... Sembrich considered her the greatest... What you are hearing here is a faint capture of her voice, which is 108 years old  and warped and scratchy... The recording, is a recording  made of a singer who was 63, and past her prime... And she sings it better than Callas did in 1965, at age 42!!  Patti had a career that lasted nearly 64 years from 1851-1914.. And was loved the whole way! She made more in one night than Lincoln made in one year!!!!! So next time, read a bit before you criticize the greatest voice that ever lived!
