not too long ago , maybe a couple years, there was a yt video of an older guy discussing Plato's and Aristotle's philosophies as well as Descarte's evil demon. He was sat and had a bookshelf behold him.

When I'm going out, when working, when I'm off to sleep and often in between. Listening to Alan Watts talk on and on about the same thing in different ways, seems like he's not even trying when explaining stuff that I feel I understand but can't articulate...even in my head. Hoping to hear a new one, most times I recognize the intro in these clips but I don't mind. Every time I recognize a different point in them. Only on youtube comments do I find people who seem to feel the same way. Is that sad or wonderful? It's wonderful that people can connect online, no matter the distance, but it's sad we'll probably never meet to discuss it..

+Manfred von Richthofen Agreed, I feel the same way. But then I think to myself I'm no different than the rest, I just chose this way of thinking instead of another so is there a real difference between the two? Because neither make a real difference, both create more illusions and food for the mistaken self. However, zen philosophy can be used as a tool instead of merely being another depiction of reality. To quote Alan, it's a finger pointing at the moon, but most people are looking at the finger, sucking it for comfort their whole lives... And that I don't want but I fear that I'll just fall inline with the rest because I'm surrounded by them. I am them. What to do? That's my dilemma.I hope this make some sense to you.Greetings friend

He contradicted himself: "If you imagine that you're separate from it and you're being carried along BY it as if you were a cork, that's a delusion. You're a wave of the stream itself. So, get with it!" This doesn't make sense, as you would not need to tell the wave to get with it. You would only need to do that with the 'cork' (perhaps not even then). I do like Alan Watts, but this same contradiction crops up again and again and again in what he says. It's a real flaw in his thinking.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Quentin Crisp The way that I understand this idea is the following: If you accept thatwe are waves in the stream then we have no choice to "get with it"because we are with it. But, we are “with it” only in a physical sense, or, inevery other sense but in a conscious sense. We often want to consciously flowthis way or that way because we consider those options possibilities.Possibilities are a product of ignorance, and ignorance is a product of being consciouslyisolated to one space and time. So, we often suffer from anxiety because certain things don’t occur theway we want them too right? We have this notion of should/shouldn’t, and thismyriad of possibility and fantasy, etc. All because our limited consciousperspective is out of harmony with the flow, the stream, the other waves, etc. So, I absolutely agree with you that it is a contradiction to tell awave to “get with it” when it is with it and can only be with it. But, he’s nottelling the wave to get with it. He’s telling your consciousness to get withit. For you to consciously realize and accept that you are a wave in the stream(and therefore you are the stream) in order to relieve the anxiety that isoften caused by the disharmony between the conscious should/shouldn’t and the “is”.It’s basically the determinism vs free will argument. If the universe isgoverned by certain laws and everything operates according to these laws thenthere is only one way that things can occur. But we feel like we have a choice whenwe do things. So, do we have a choice, what is consciousness, is it not subject to these laws, blah blah. He’s just saying to accept what happens and to realize why. So again, I think he means that “you are with it, so consciouslyaccept that you are with it and learn to enjoy it, or don’t accept it and be ina perpetual state of anxiety.” Does that make sense?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c7771b37N_0/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/YFCmEUE8qeE/photo.jpg?sz=64
I'm not new to Taoism, but this is a pretty important contradiction. Basically, he is subliminally affirming dualism while supposedly denying it. He does fleetingly address this fact here and there (I've read a few of his books), but it remains, I think, a largely unresolved problem in his work, and perhaps for many others who expound a non-dualist view. In short: I think noticing things is good, rather than just letting it wash over you. I think this contradiction is worth questioning and contemplating.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-BCPHg2_R9EM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAxk/iIDwHMXhbrI/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Quentin Crisp When you get to the essence of philosophical Taoism, though, the light is dark, without yin there cannot be yang so yin is yang, etc, contradictions abound. It's the internalization of those contradictions that begin to shed light on the process of the philosophy, so saying a lecturer of "Taoism" is contradicting himself is redundant. It's gonna happen and gonna keep happening.

It seems like this man thinks what we think doesn't matter, and therefore what he is saying doesn't matter. It also seems like he puts matter ahead of conscience. Almost saying that our conscience is a joke. He want s to call humans the same as apples when clearly we are not. Do whatever you want or don't want he says, but then he starts to say what we should do.. Please don't force us to do what you say. I have a conscience. Im am not just matter, maybe you are. If you are then please stop talking like apples and lions, Be a wild animal and please don't tell us how to behave teacher.

well i thought it was pretty profound, do we put matter ahead of consciousness? which is more important? and because of your comment i was able to come to the conclusion that here is that which exists that is neither consciousness nor matter, what do we even call it or describe it let alone what is it? i apologize i was unable to conclude which is more important-consciousness or matter, but i propose to you that matter must exist without consciousness, and that consciousness might exist without matter, but that we as human are a bit of both and both are important, and i am not willing to eschew matter for the sake of consciousness, nor am i willing to eschew consciousness for the sake of matter, so i conclude for the sake of practical use that they have to learn to work together, one may have priority at a given time but not all  the time. i also apologize i was not able to conclude neither which came first (consciousness or matter) nor was i able to conclude the origin of either one from the other, or even the ultimate universal origin of either matter or consciousness, i guess it'll just have to wait until another day. if i figure it out i'll tell you, hope this helps, peace

We are free apples that can throw around opinons. The understanding is pretty clear. Essentially comes down to not taking ourselves or our religions too seriously. Maybe thats why he says we're no different than an apple. Pretty much clears up that nobody can understand reality and peoples points are just irrelevant conscience. So all of this is worth laughing at. Why, because laughing feels good. But certainly i appreciate all my fellow apples willing to weigh in. I really liked the idea of a father figure being clowned on aka bible bangers. So i can throw around opinions and not worry about father figures.

Not sure if you listened to the whole message , your response to this seems as if you only got a quarter of what he may be implying. Your voice has only a fragment of the whole but yet projected as if it has full understanding. He is explaining Tao philosophy not an idea he has created. Again I am sure you only listened to a bit or fragmented pieces of this talk. Curbing your voice would have been in your best interest until you take more time to understand. If you come to the same conclusion well then that's ok , but first get the full picture before throwing around opinion.

+TimezUp23"Simply put, science wants you to believe you don't matter, because you are just matter."The person speaking in this video is a philosopher, not a scientist. We don't matter and the "reasoning" isn't because we are made up of matter."It wants us to believe that conscience just popped up all the sudden during evolution lol"Again science doesn't want us to "believe" anything. And no, the theory says that it developed over time, not all of a sudden."Take it for granted , when really all of science owes conscience for it's existence ."How would you "not take conscience for granted"? Make it a shrine? Also, again YES, without conscientiousness we wouldn't have science."Now people like you want us to believe conscience is a result of evolution."That's because it is."You have to prove it though, and you can't ."Since I'm getting sick of this circular argument, prove the existence of a god. Faith is not proof NOR is it evidence. (Neither is the bible)"Which makes you religious my friend, not scientific. demonstrate when matter becomes aware lol"You are obviously uneducated about religion also. Demonstrate your god's powers."The beauty is we can think and make choices, unlike the apple ."Congratulations, you again, pointed out what I have already said."That might not mean anything to you, but it is what makes us human. What I said above."We are not perfect and nature is ."How is nature, in any way, perfect? Considering we are PRODUCTS of nature."Uh oh... clear difference between nature and humans."... Neither is really "perfect" so no, that's not a difference."And if you think we are harmonious with nature and perfect, you may want to do some scientific observation."Neither humans or nature is "perfect". I don't know why you would believe in such a fallacy."Di I mention science makes oil and plastic...."No, being since this is completely off topic with our argument."Science is why humans are not harmonious with nature ."Because we make plastic? Science is what helps us UNDERSTAND the world, not exploit it. (For the people who use it correctly)

+TimezUp23"Oh yeah... so when did conscience develop along this evolutionary path?"Along with further development of the brain."Can it be proven and demonstrated ?"Yes. Research "micro-evolution"."Are you telling me we can observe matter without conscience?"Never said this once. So, my answer is no.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0w-KPA4dkXY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAKw/5jN-TbN35pM/photo.jpg?sz=64
+TimezUp23 I will no longer reply to anything you say about humans "being apples". I was saying how we are similar to an apple in many ways, you decided to think I meant we ARE apples.

+TimezUp23 "If we are simply matter , then what you say is completely mindless, because who would listen to an apple?"I was saying we are more similar to an apple than you think. I never said we ARE an apple."What I say  is completely true, only because I know that without conscience, we cannot observe matter."You're right. We cannot observe matter without consciousness, I also said that this is the main thing that makes us DIFFERENT to apples."The tree does not make a sound if none is around to hear it."I don't see how this is relevant to anything here. Yes you're most likely correct about this."The speaker should have more respect for his conscience."I'm assuming you mean Watts. I'm going to say that he most likely did. (RIP)"It makes science possible."Yes again this is correct."Of course science tries to play God, but falls short proving that conscience came from nothing."SCIENCE doesn't try to do anything, being since it doesn't have a mind to do such a thing. Also, if you were to actually read up on the theory of evolution you would find they actually have a pretty good idea on how consciousness came about. And it says nothing about it coming from "nothing"."A molecule does not have a conscience, matter does not have a conscience."You're right again, a single molecule or atom does NOT have a conscience, but the collective group of atoms and molecules that make up the neurons and synapses in our brain do, in a sense. They themselves don't but working together they can achieve it."They can not demonstrate conscience just coming about from matter."How so? Do you not even know how your own brain works? Scientists have a pretty good understanding (even though still incomplete) of how are brain works and how it could achieve conscience."Sorry you take your conscience for granted."You're basically saying that I take MYSELF for granted... Which really doesn't make sense."Unfortunately, science wants us to be compared to apples, and say life has no meaning, but we are human and can understand love and all the emotions ."Again science isn't doing or thinking anything being since it does not have a mind.If anything (from a non-religious standpoint) the meaning of life is to reproduce and ensure the survival of our species. (More evolution) If you don't want this to be the meaning then you're right, life has no meaning. Our emotions are the result of chemical reactions that happen in our brain. There's nothing really special about them."So control your God given emotions, or go be a blank apple."How am I not already controlling my emotions? Are you trying to say I'm angry? I'm just having an intellectual conversation with you. I'm controlling them quite well.I should have said (which I'll add to my last retort) that we are not AN APPLE, we are SIMILAR to the apple in many ways.If you enter philosophy close-minded then you'll be disappointed because there are plenty of views that disagree with religion.

+raami jacksMatter can't grow a conscience. Science is baffled by this. It has no idea where conscience came from. This is deeply profound. This man thinks conscience is irrelevant. We all have a conscience. We are all different as is every apple. He wants mans life to be meaningless and maybe we are , but conscience came before matter. Without conscience, we cannot observe matter. Science does not exist without conscience. Plane and simple

"It seems like this man thinks what we think doesn't matter, and therefore what he is saying doesn't matter." Something tells me you haven't studied philosophy, because that is a terrible argument
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0w-KPA4dkXY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAKw/5jN-TbN35pM/photo.jpg?sz=64
We are the same as the apple. The only thing that makes us different is consciousness.Consciousness is the product of the neurons and synapses in our brains. THOSE themselves function only in the limits that the laws of the universe allows. Those synapses, neurons, and the cells that make up an apple are all products of the same thing. Evolution. This makes consciousness a non-unique thing. We are only different from the apple because we can GRASP our own existence.

regarding the masculine and feminine at about 7: Dion Fortune said something like, on the Qabalistic tree, the sephiroth are masculine to those they are influencing and feminine to those that are receiving the influence. I don't understand beyond that--just the basics.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-XjZhPyYogCI/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAA4/-x-teCYJCRA/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Lisa Colorado that's right. the masculine and feminine qualities aren't fixed. each sephira contains both modalities, as we all do. some try to attributed a masculine vs. feminine attribution to the pillars, but that doesn't really work either. at least i don't think it's that helpful. on my taroscopes mystery school we go into the most accurate analysis and use of the tree of life, and make it come alive both in a practical and symbolic manner. but this series here gives us a chance to look at some interesting aspects, such as the two tree system which although not perfect, gives us great insights, especially in regards the deeper meanings of the 22 major arcana.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-XjZhPyYogCI/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAA4/-x-teCYJCRA/photo.jpg?sz=64
the Fool figure himself descends from the ARCTIC HOMELAND. notice the white mountains in the background, and his descent. why add those mountains and suggest a descent from a 'high place.' we can't understand anything about our times, or about history, unless we realize what has been hidden from us. the tarot symbolically refers to this great fall, of the sun and of mankind. a new time, a new calendar, a new zodiac, and a new mythos. the tarot was created to commemorate what had been, and to encapsulate in pictures the new mythos. the tarot makers didn't mean for us to "get it" intellectually. they don't work on that banal level. the pack on his back tells us of the little that remained from the past. it was mostly lost. modern historical man wasn't left a hell of a lot. but a tarot deck will fit in that little bag he's carrying. hence the carefree look on his face. it's not all lost after all.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-2F4t1Ir2sxg/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAN0/H4EB8y3ERK4/photo.jpg?sz=64
+UnslavedFilms When I studied with BOTA, I would give up for exactly the reason that I couldn't "get it" or gain an advantage from it. In older years now, the difference between the view then to the view now is like a flat picture then, and a 3D model now. And it seems like the thing to do is pick up on the image and the symbol, and then listen. Had to develop that capacity.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0g7Leb6I-yw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAB8/vHIbmwEKpgw/photo.jpg?sz=64
+UnslavedFilms If you take Walter Cruttendens' theory of the binary system and in particular the movement of the two suns, as they get closer together you would expect a different magnetic pull than when they were far apart. The always changing magnetic pull between the two suns could be causing our solar cycle to constantly change frequency. Our calibration of time is derived from the cycle of the solar system, therefore our calibration of time could be constantly be changing, causing our perception of time to change, which could explain why days get feel shorter as you get older.

I find the Whole discussion whether something can come from nothing or not too superficial. I think that something actually CAN come out of nothing. If something can´t come out of nothing then how can we die? Death doesn´t come out of nothing right?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
Yeah this is great stuff to chew on!  My understanding of no-thing is that it doesn't exist in the pure sense of the word.  No-thing derives from abstract thought.  It's like 0, it's not a real number but a symbol of the abstract thought of the place between polarity, it's the nexus of phase conjugation.  The cosmic joke is that all left brained approaches can only dance around "it" and point at "it" yet this very act separates us from "it"!  It sure is fun though and can be beneficial as long as you don't get caught on the hamster wheel:)  It's like saying "the tao that can be spoken is not the tao."  To truly know something is outside of language and debate, it is something we must experience. That wholeness, 0, place between polarity, connection to source can be approached by knowledge and language but it is something entirely different that allows us to cross the threshold and actually be there.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
Well, then we can´t have any discussion at all since we can´t mention anything with words, and then the problem or what we´ll call it will never be solved. And maybe we aren´t supposed to like with the Zen-koans which we have never received a rational satisfying answer to. You know the one with how to make to hands clap and how you make one hand clap for example. Or the one with "to pretend to pretend something that you pretend to be. When it comes to the "invisible" man this invisible man only exists in the thoughts. And now I suspect you to do something like the same thing that Ken Watanabe and Leonardo Di Caprio were trying to do to each other in "Inception". Or when you´re playing with someone´s thoughts. If you think it´s there it isn´t. If you think it´s not it is.

I was waiting for a point. You've found all these little synchronisms but never draw a any conclusion from your "decoding". As a musician, I'm aware that patterns usually develop from compositions because music is based on mathematical principles. Isn't that a standard? 3 verses, 1 chorus after every verse. Is there a website or book that I need to be hip to-to see where you're coming from? Otherwise, I'd say downgrade to the REGULAR weed. Peace.
