The rules I set for myself as I started my garage: 1) No credit. Cash and
carry only. 2)NEVER borrow money when things get tough. I started my garage
on under $500 and I made money from day 1. 3) Keep the overhead low. Buy
cheap or even used tools, boycott the tool trucks. Harbor Freight! And last
but not least, I started my business as an atheist and I struggled. After
my wife left me for a guy with more money (barely), I turned to Jesus. He
made my business better than ever before. He is a great partner.
I know this is an old video but here's my take. Making videos is cool but
when you give away your experience and knowledge for free how are you going
to make money? How many years of schooling and actual working in shops
experience do you have? You want to give all that knowledge you worked
hard for away for free on here just to make some people happy? Yeah it's
cool to make people happy but it doesn't pay the bills. If people want in
depth repair help you need to charge for it. Time and knowledge cost money
so they need to pay for it.
My thoughts as well. He is giving away knowledge that only experience can teach. To me that's why you pay people to fix and repair stuff. They need to get paid for it as well.
Gotta say I'm a big fan here, for probably at least a year. To some extent,
watching your videos is one of the contributing factors the pushed me to
want to be an auto technician. I couldn't help but notice that you
mentioned in some of your videos that you worked in the grocery business
for a lot of years; I myself have been employed in the grocery business for
13+ years, and within the last couple years (ESPECIALLY last year) I have
really grown to absolutely HATE it. It's gotten so much worse since I
started. Anyways, I went into depression thinking I'm trapped in that awful
business with no way out; last June, one night on my last break after a
particularly horrible workday, I kept thinking "I gotta find a way out
quick before this job kills me, I really need to get my ass back to
school... let's see... I'm quite skilled with my hands, love turning
wrenches, I'm fascinated with machinery, etc..." Also the videos you did of
that '99 Civic engine swap kept replaying in my head. I called my wife that
night on my break to vent and explain to her (again) about how desperate I
am for a new career, and how I need to get back to school to make it
happen, but still had no idea what I wanted to do. She said she'll look up
what programs they have at her school. I think that's when I had the
"AH-HAH!" moment. I suddenly said "I should be a mechanic!!!!" She didn't
find an automotive program at her school, but found one at a different
community college close to my house. The rest is history. There have been
many helpful and greatly supportive people including my wife. And you Eric,
even though I don't know you personally, you have been a huge inspiration
to me. I'm no stranger to getting down on life every once in a while, I've
had a few nasty depression episodes myself. If it's one thing I've learned
though, is that no matter how bad things seem at the moment things will
always improve and get way better. One last thing, thank you Eric for
posting all these great videos and being an inspiration to me and countless
others. You are indeed a genuinely good person. :)
It's always great to hear when my work has a positive influence. Thank you for that. Good luck with the new career. I know it's done well by me. I don't miss the grocery business one bit.
