VIMS Crab Release
Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science release hatchery-reared blue crabs into the York River in a collaborative effort to determine whether such ...
It's not all that complicated to properly regulate the commercial fishing
industries of Virginia, in order to restore the crab population.
1. Ban the use of peeler pots
2. Restrict crabbers to 300 pots, or less
3. Institute an overall maximum catch limit of 25 bushels per day
4. Restrict the maximum catch limit of cushions (egg bearing females), to
15 bushels per day
5. Allow watermen to acquire Rock fishing tags
6. Limit (or further limit) the amount of bunker fish that can be
commercially harvested
These measures would help, not only the crab population, but also the
commercial crabbers- as it would work to balance the inherent supply and
demand aspect of commercial fishing. Crabbers wouldn't need to catch
boatloads of crabs, in order to make a living- by effectively capping the
supply.
I realize that VMRC is responsible for regulating the industry in VA,
however, since all their efforts over the years have only resulted in the
increasing demise of the crab population... it begs the question: *Do they
actually have any idea what they're doing?*
In addition, it falls to the regulation of other industries entirely,
i.e., agriculture, manufacturing, etc., in order to improve water quality.
Food for thought, perhaps?
