This is a look at our Orchid Society Show that took place yesterday The Bournemouth Orchid Society hosts 2 shows each year - set up and judging takes place in ...
Thanks for sharing, Roger, I really enjoyed watching this video. The
Cochlioda rosea in the beginning is beautiful and also the plants on the
plants on the competitive talbes, especially the the Papilionanthe vandarum
(?). The Phal. section surprised me a bit, though. They were nice, but not
particularly impressive and where were the species and primary hybrids? :)
+Roger Frampton I guessed as much, it's the same in our society. ;) There's a huge difference between those common hybrids in the grocery stores and species Phals and I don't take them seriously until they show me they're beautiful specimens of Phal. lowii or wilsonii that are too easy for them to grow. :D I quite believe it, it looks like a lot of work. Thanks for taking us with you.
+Bumblebee The view of some people at the society is that phalaenopsis are not worth bothering with as they are so common. And those that do like them are moving towards the species. One person calls them 'orchid weeds'. I think they still have a place - they are the reason that many start the orchid hobby in the first place. But yes, there were not as many as usual? Our next show is in September so maybe more will show up then (but that's not their normal flowering period?) Thanks for watching. I enjoyed the day even though I was very busy.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful display of orchid love and care by your
society members and the quality offerings of the traders. That custom made
pottery looks well crafted.
+John OBrien It was a good day. The 'potting and advice' bench I was on was non-stop so I didn't get as much time to look around as I would have liked. But it also stopped me buying too many plants!
Thanks Roger for sharing your lovely orchid show with us! I really liked
the music and the blooms were perfect. love that big ceologeny cristata in
a supermarket basket! that must have been more than 20 yrs old? i loved the
maroon/dark colour Cymbidiums and i spotted one Lycaste with two big
flowers. Thanks again.
The white coelogyne is like the one I have flowering at the moment and it
has 4 spikes/sprays and smells wonderful. What an exciting day this must
have been. I would have had to empty the piggy bank there were so many
beautiful plants. Thanks for sharing.
+Jackie Binkley I was 'very good' - I didn't buy anything! (except some that had been pre-ordered from one of the traders - it saves on the postage). But then I did spend most of the time on the 'repoting and advice' bench which kept me at arm's length from the plants. I will do a quick 'mini-haul' video if the builders next door stop all the banging!!!! I think that big coelogyne was 'cristata' but there are lots around where I live that have the variety 'lemoniana'. It looks very similar. Apparently, it was named after the hybridiser not the colour.
A superb, beautifully presented video. All the information at the beginning
was brilliant and I loved the page turning technique and the calming
Japanese music. OMG all those phrags! And I laughed out loud at that
enormous coelogyne in the square basket!
That sign saying 'all orchids for sale" was very tantalising!
Isn't it amazing how people in our part of the world, with completely the
wrong growing environment for orchids, can produce such magnificent
specimens!
+Gardening at Douentza We do what we can despite the short dull days in the Winter. But I'm lucky at this society - we have some of the best growers in the country. Our president - the smartly dressed gent next to that huge Coelogyne 'in a basket' is Keith Andrews of 'Keith Andrew's Orchids' that were based many years ago in a little village called Plush. He actually produced the original well-known hybrid 'Cambria Plush'.
