I'm sure he would have been just as condescending if it was to be, say, a WHSmith-branded calculator, simply by dint of the fact that it is a store's "own brand" calculator and would therefore likely be of inferior quality to a Casio or Texas, for instance. It's got nothing to do with the fact that Staples is American.
