4-17-2013 Lawton, OK Tornado
Video of a brief tornado southwest of Lawton. Taken at the intersection of SW Lee Blvd and Red Elk Rd, looking southeast.
Ah, don't let the history of the weather fool you. Tornadoes can strike
anywhere and every 50 states have had at least 1 tornado before. If the
ingredients are there, a tornado can form. Lawton has been hit directly
twice in the past by strong tornadoes; once in 1957 and again in 1979.
There was a tornado that hit the Goodyear Plant on this day, and another
just to the northwest near Elgin. Also I was closer to Lawton. I was at the
intersection of Lee Blvd and Red Elk Rd, looking south.
I'm just glad that no one is hurt. These storms are unpredictable, so it
could've been a lot worst. The siren did, but its like it died as they
fired it up so the only one we heard was from Fletcher. I think I know why
on the news, they said that they wanted to build two more tornado sirens in
Elgin. Weird thing is that this is the first tornado recorded to have ever
touched down in Elgin, at least its the first one in history to have been
recorded.
I live in Elgin next to the high school, this was one crazy storm I heard
we had five confirmed EF-1 tornadoes. I wish I could of seen it but I had
to look after my family since the school was closed (its one of the storm
shelters here since none of the new houses built here have a safe room or
shelter) and the siren in Elgin didn't go off either, the siren we heard
came from Fletcher, either way this is good footage, thank you.
Thanks for the compliment! I'm glad you and your family are safe. This
storm was indeed a dangerous one. I'm shocked that Elgin didn't sound the
sirens as this storm, along with 3 other, came very close to town. I know
Lawton had the sirens sounding for all 3 tornado warned storms that came
through. Thanks for watching and stay safe!
Just to the west of Lawton, so you were nearer to Cache. Lawton doesn't get
tornadoes. I was there for 2 years and the weather was always less than
exciting. But drive 20 miles in either direction, and you'd find doom
waiting for you. Lawton is just geographically not conducive for tornadoes.
if you look close there was dirt swirling around underneath that rotating
wall cloud. Technically that was counted as a tornado. I've been talking
with the Norman NWS who confirm it as a tornado as well.
