Railroad Spike Hatchet / Tomahawk Demo
A demonstration of how I forge spikes into hatchets and tomahawks. This demo was recorded as part of my Wednesday Livestream- "Today at the forge" series ...
just came across this video. I'm just starting to watch and learn about
blacksmithing and been watching many people here forging RR spikes and I
must say your explanations on how you do things help me understand certain
aspects of forging so much more. I thank you for that. you should make more
vids like this one explaining while you are working on the project. simply
awesome. good teachings
Would it be possible to clamp up the part to be upset in a leg vice and
hammer it that way? This is one of the better hawk demos I've seen on
YouTube, thank you and we'll done.
Hello and thanks. The problem you have when trying to upset in a vice is that you dont get nearly as much ground force reaction as you would from the anvil. Having a heavy mass on the opposite side of the strike acts like a second hammer and when you clamp the sides instead you are losing some of that helpful force. With the steel hot enough it will work just not as quickly.
I apologize in an advance for this question but a couple years ago i bought
some welding tables from a man in Columbia,Kentucky (im from town in
Indiana 20miles from Louisville.) The man said he had moved to Columbia
from Georgia with his wife and son who was a blacksmith. I told him my
interest in it and he show me a shop that looked very similar to the one
your in. He was a woodworker and made coffins if i remember right.
Unfortunately his son wasn't there because he took a trip to louisville for
a smithing class. I was wondering if the man's son is you. Again i
apologize for how odd this is, if you happen to not be the son this is
probably the weirdest comment you have ever received.
On another note this video is wonderful. You skills are fantastic and the
axe looks great!
No worries, but sorry no, I'm the only craftsman in my family till my daughter grows up at least ;)
Cold Steel Trail Master
A quick look at one of my favorite trail knives of the last 23 years, the Cold Steel Trailmaster. I bought it "used" in 1988 or '89 at a gun show in Nashville.
cold steel markets the trail master(and others) as a "survival knife"
chopping and batoning are part of that, I think they need to rethink what a
knife meant for True Survival needs to be able to handle, these days it
seems as though the guys buying their stuff know more about what makes a
good product than the company producing it, and thats a good thing maybe
the end consumers can get them to stop cutting corners and start making
blades that live up to the "survival" category they're put in.
Not a lot of people know about them, but Grohmann makes some amazing
survival knives that I have gotten tons of good customer feedback on.
Strangely enough, it's a 55 year old design that they haven't "streamlined"
in the least. Oh yeah, and Cold Steel made a cheap rip-off of it and called
it the "Canadian Belt Knife" and managed to streamline it so much that I'm
pretty sure I could have broken it with my bare hands. Cold Steel has gone
so far down hill, I would never trust their stuff now.
Might be overkill, but personally I would look into all the crevices and
check for rust just in case, since this blade is a hidden tang it might have
some rust somewhere and as a chopping/batoning knife it will take a lot of
abuse (all of mine do) and the last thing you'd want is for the handle to
give when you need the knife the most.Personally i prefer a full tang with
easily removable handles because in case they break in any way i know how
to cord wrap the handle, just my 2 cents.
lol good luck with that. if guns are legislated away it will be the first
shot in the civil war. and who do you think will win? those fighting for
freedom who already know how to use the weapons of war? or lazy snobby
twenty somthing college drop outs who smoke pot and dont like weapons
anyway? 90 million americans own at least ONE firearm. in a nation of 312
million. that number doesnt include spouses and children who have access
but dont actually own a firearm
Kaqmijn, Not sure about your Information, Hickok can probably verify, Mine
says Made in the USA right on the Blade hilt, As I stated, I believe today
all Cold Steel is made in Japan, There was a time when they were made in
the United States. I also own a Cold Steel SRK i bought maybe 10-15 years
ago New, It also says Made in the USA, I think the Japan move came within
the last 15 years or so when All American Businesses started to close up
and moved overseas.
You've got some vile morons in the comments section you may want to deal
with. Excellent Knife! I've got an Old Solengen Bowie I bought as a kid,
usually pretty close to me 2' away now. It rusted in shipping from over
seas (I couldn't take it with me personally) Cleaned it up, ain't so shiny
but I like the Patina cutting glare. Good as it ever was.
Awesome! I had the #1 belt knife for a few years, loved it as a light duty
camping knife. too bad I lost it. Check out the #4 Survival, nice chunk of
knife. I do warn though, if you go carbon over stainless, it's like old
school carbon, needs to be cleaned and oiled after use. But if you do, you
will be rewarded with an amazing knife for life.
Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. Mind you, people tend to keep wanting to use
them instead of a Machete or a hatchet, and that's not really what they are
intended for. I think if they were a full width tang, it would also help
with their balance issues too. But you know, we are just the end consumer,
what do we know, right?
Hickok, I have that same knife I bought New back in the 80's, It's a Hellva
Knife, The Video that came with it showed the torture test they put it
thru, I remember they had it in a vise and bent the blade something like 80
degrees without breaking it. Hang on to it, Cold Steel nowadays is made in
Japan I believe.
The South Western states are pretty much part of those "exotic lands" by
now... Any day now you will have your state flag's become a giant burrito,
and have your anthem be "Narcocorrido" music. Football will be replaced
with sleeping for 8 hours a day, and the Cannabis fields will grow as far
as the eye can see.
Is usa the only country in the world where u can get your hand on so many
firearms ,cause of ur stupid chart of 200 yrs pld, anyway it wont stay that
way, very long, its anormal civilians playing with heavy guns like if they
were toys,no country in the world can live with such laws,The American are
too cocky.
O ya man not taking anything away from a mosin just saying based on what he
said about wanting a high end rifle that he can use in a lot of different
applications I would take the remmy. But your right for the price of a
mosin its hard to beat for a general purpose plinker, heck you can even
hunt with it.
I used mine as a slap jack one night when my neighbors boyfriend was
beating her on her front porch,I left it in the leather sheath and clubbed
him upside his head and it was lights out.Try that with a smaller knife
hahahaha Anyway great vid Hickok as always you have great taste :-)
How about that Mr. H....I bought my Trailmaster back in the late eighties
also...great knife (hang onto it -these original versions were the best
production hard use bowies made by Lynn Thompson right here in the
USA)...way cool to see one still being used today...
hey hickok45 i have noticed that you have ear plugs all the time well i use
them to but since you are good with guns i thought that you would be used
to the gun shot noise but its you choice not mine but good vids keep them
comeing.
i have over 80k rounds saved. varrious caliburs more than i could ever use
myself. amo is cheap and plentiful and i know how to make my own. not to
mention i have 18 muzzle loading rifles. and i use my own formula of black
powder.
I think they currently only make the Trailmaster in SK-5 and VG1 SAN MAI. I
think the older black coated Trailmasters were another type of carbon
steel. I don't think they ever made the trailmaster in AUS8 though.
No problem, glad I could help. That mosin will reach out and touch someone!
Don't be surprised to see it hitting targets at 400-500 yds. That should
reach out a bit further than a shotgun or a pistol lol.
Hmm. I'd argue you don't need something quite as heavy-duty as this, but
whatever floats your boat. Also the Spetsnaz Shovel is pretty
funny..."let's sharpen something then stick it in the dirt!"
Fallout 4 Gameplay Walkthrough No Commentary PS4 1080P 60FPS (Game runs in 30fps) Full Game Walkthrough, Fallout 4 is out now worldwide! experience ...
Fallout 4 Melee Only Survival Challenge! Today, I'm going to be continuing the challenge series for Fallout 4. This is going to be more of a hardcore playthrough ...
This game play would be perfect with out commentary or your dumb face in
the right hand conor. Just saying, but I could do without your face in the
video. The reason why I called your face dumb is NOT to be mean, but from
my prospective as a grown man with kids your face looks pretty stupid in
the video. Matter of fact anyone who does this looks stupid. However,
children love this kid of stuff. So, if your idea was to pander to young
children to get views then I guess your channel is going to be alright. On
the other hand people in your age group will think you lack maturity. That
is what I thought anyway. Aww, does somebody not want to grow up? "I know
what I will do!" (light bulb) "I'll start a youtube channel because I don't
feel successful or accomplished in my current career." Matter of fact i'm
just going through the motions." "I need to meet more people closer to me
mental age group". " If grown men won't respect me then children will"
+jaylen pryor That's not the point, and there is to much to explain. Speak to your father if you have questions. You wasting your time taking advice from me. You don't know me, and you sure as hell don't know this peter pan kid in the video.
Well... you are probably right i do have a long way to go but its also good to give positive feedback even if you do throw some bad feedback I'm sure there was something in this video that you actually liked right?
+jaylen pryor Life is not easy kid. Maybe we should get you a safe space, so nobody will hurt your feelings. If you ever grow up to be a mature man you will understand what I said.
I'm going to be completely honest here i don't have a clue on half the stuff you said probably because I'm only in 10th grade but you said from your perspective as a grown man, but they you are criticizing someone's video is not setting a good example for your kids in the future even if it you are speaking your mind you shouldn't had said not trying to be mean but the whole paragraph was actually offensive
+Niflick It's affected you more then you will ever know kid. If not, you would have not replied back. Guys like you are easily manipulated by words. At this point you are unable to offend me. In regrad to me playing the "no offense card" Remember! I hold all the cards in this conversation.
+William Ellison Here's a tip: If you want to throw insults around don't use the "No Offense" card, it makes you look weak. Also don't forget to spellcheck before you post an (edited) comment. Thanks for the free view though, your comment has zero effect on me. I'll just keep doing what I love doing.
