Showing Pos And Neg Lead acid battery plates and some red lead ( Lead Oxide ). My hopes are to be able to rebuild some lead acid batteries for off grid living.
Thanks for the good video.
I was wondering, .......... what happens if you crush the positive plates
just as they are, to a fine powder (the left over lead and the PbO2) and
then make that into the paste? I have done that and it seems to work ok. I
got a short cct current of 4.68 amps after charging. The short cct current
was sustained for at least ten minutes at which time it went just below 1
amp. The test cell I made was very tiny, only 1 inch wide x three inches
high surface area.
The forming of the new rejigged positive plate, improved vastly after three
or four charge discharge cycles. Thanks Edward
P.S. May I caution you that those gloves are next to useless as a guard
against the toxic lead dust. You really need to use fully black rubber
gloves that are fully sealed.
+Thinking out side box , ..... Yep I sure will let you know. It was watching your video that inspired me to try in the first place, so I am very indebted to you. You need / deserve the thanks more than me :-). By the way, ..... it is very important to use non-contaminated water for the electrolyte. Distilled water is good, but de-ionised water is better as there are no electrical ions inside that could discharge your plates and make the battery just junk. A cheep source I found is pure and chemical - free and bacteria free drinking water. You should be able to find it in the super market shelf for around $1.00 a litre. So it will probably be $5.00 a gallon for you guys. I am assuming your from the US. I am in Australia. I hope to try aluminum sulphate so that the nasty sulphuric acid is removed from the batteries. Others say Epson salts also works. I just dont have the test of these done yet. Like you, I am also working on making a grid. regards Edward
+eeezygoing Yes very much agree with the cloves. They were only for making the video and thrown out afterwards. Yes useless for sure. Neat about you little plates you made. I never figured out yet how to make a big lead grid for the paste to be pressed into. I,m thinking of using some hard wood. Its something I,m still playing around with. Your welcome also Edward. Tks for sharing your little playing around also. If you go bigger let me know please how it worked out. Take care
+Sky Pup Well the only additive they stick in is Antimony. They mix it in with the lead melt and cast the grids from it. The reason is to harden the lead so that the acid is less reactive with the positive grid metal to make the battery longer lasting. So does the Sulphur remove the Antimony?
It takes out impurities (from what I've read). I've never done any of this before. It makes the lead, more leady, more gooder! Soft lead is way better than hard lead.
+eeezygoing Blob separation procedure (in my mind)--- Remelt blob of stuff in favorite iron skillet. Scrape off the crud off the top then mix in some sulfur to remove more crap from inside lead. At least, that's the plan. Stage II will be at home, not at the friend's ranch. The plastic should be very carbonized when I'm done with it.Speaking of which. I sure wish I had some of these cool little lead casts I used to use in school.
+Sky Pup Yeah it is interesting. Here's a link from the web, FYI :-)https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Ph+of+the+human+body&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=9s90Vr3cJMa4mAWmnojoBgBTW , ...... How will you separate the blob of melted plastic from the lead?
+eeezygoing To be honest, it's too late. The acid is, now, part of my lawn. It's okay, the PH of the dirt here is WAY way too alkaline. I keep adding stuff to acidify it. The stuff I try and plant never grows. Someone told me about the PH Level. Now, that little tiny patch will be more acidic. I really don't think the environment is as sensitive as most people seem to believe these days. My melted battery will not register even on the most sensitive of instruments. And killing stuff in my ground is good. I hate chiggers! I'm constantly spraying the ground with bug killer. I've tried all the organic stuff, it never worked. Farm grade pesticides sure do!Next time I'll do this baking soda bit. I'm not that cheap. I think I even have an extra box! That's interesting about the water and PH..I never knew! Interesting!
+Sky Pup Sky Pup we both know you're not really worried about contaminating the environment etc or safety stuff at all by your answers, .... so you've already made your choice to get lead metal from nasty batteries. Anyways, the best way to stop sulphourous acid from being acidic, is to flush the battery with a mixture of 50% baking soda with 50% water. That will neutralise the acid so that the ground you are washing the battery out on will be at close to Ph 7.0 , which is the Ph of that incredible substance water. Did you know that our own human body requires and maintains Ph 7.0 in our tissues to stay healthy? Except of course our incredible stomachs that need acidic Ph from hydrochloric acid. But I find it incredible that water is at the exact right Ph for our bodies. We can thank the almighty for that. :-) P.S. Baking soda is like 90 cents for 250 grams so dont be so cheep to not use it cos using plain water will only dilute the acid. Any creatures in the ground will get burned to death by the acid your gonna pour onto them lol
+eeezygoing The sulfuric acid is the only thing I was worried about (sorta). I figured I'll flush the battery with water and that should take care of mr. Sulfuric Acid. What ever sinks to the bottom will be nice lead. This will be in a nice hot bon fire (at the end, I'll do it when everyone is asleep and upwind) The heat should bring back nice and stable lead. Don't worry, I'm not going to sit there and ingest all the fumes and stuff.I'll live, I'll be safe. Thanks. :)(ps, what is safe/safer/safest is not always the most fun)...what I'm doing is not dangerous (by my standards, any-hoo)
Lead acid batteries are heavy that is obvious but it is also mostly oxide. The grids are very thin lead metal with heaps of oxide all in them. The oxide contributes massively to the weight. PbO2 (lead dioxide) weighs 9 grams per centimeter cubed. Lead metal is 11 grams per cm 3. But you have to discard the oxides as they will not melt into lead metal for sinkers etc . Anyways, ....... I was just trying to save you mucking about with the toxic oxides and distasteful sulphourous acid lol. Whatever you do you want to stay healthy. Lead oxides as dust are very bad for the lungs. Also absorbed into bare skin or eyes. I just think its safer to use wheel weights or lead sheet. :-) So remember, lead acid batteries are heavy but the oxide is much higher percentage of the volume of the batteries than actual lead metal. All the best Edward
I wish I could get some of that roof lead! I had a little bit of sheet one time, that was the Best stuff! It was easy to cut and shape!I never knew that about the Thames River. That's through London, isn't it?Don't worry, I don't fish very often, but I still need some sinkers! Steel rusts too fast for my blood. Whomever throws in the can must be 'sober' enough to run away from the fire. It actually takes a lot longer than I thought it would for those little cans to burn! It's not like in the movies.Lead acid batteries are Filled with lead. The thing weighs something like 40lbs. While the plates might be thin, they are plentiful.
+Sky Pup , ..................... Sky Pup, .... You need to be very careful around drunks. They think they are having great fun, but they will create dangerous situations and areas that you should not be near. Be very careful and keep your distance from drunk people doing explosions ! Also, ...... it is better to get your lead for sinkers from things like lead roofing flashing. Batteries dont really contain much solid lead cos the battery plates are thin on purpose so that they produce electricity more efficiently. If you use lead sheet instead (just ask local plumbers or roofers for off cuts) then you can just cut it up with metal cutting shears. But always still use rubber gloves when handling lead. By the way, ........... it is better to use steel for sinkers because that doesn't poision the lakes and rivers. Just because people used lead for sinkers doesnt mean we have to do the same. Did you know that the Thames river in London became so contaminated by lead sinkers from hundreds of years of people using lead, that the Authorities banned fisher men from using it in the Thames any more?. People were finding damaged fish, ..... like fish with misshapen bodies etc and fish with two heads etc. That's what alerted people to the poisioning problem of lead in waterways. Use old steel nuts instead lol
That not a fire I want to be around. Exploding propane tanks. No not me I was thinking you were wanting to make sinkers. I never melted a battery in a fire before. Not really sure what the out come will be. I,m pretty sure no exploding will be taking place though. But I,m no pro on it either. Don,t know what else to tell you Sky. I made lots of sinkers when I was a young boy that's for sure. I used old lead wheel weights. I use to walk a lot down the side roads and after enough trips. Over a period of time I would have collected a pretty good little pile of them. So I liked fishing and made my own sinkers to use. It was pretty neat. I just drilled holes in wood and bent a little piece of wire and put the wire in with the loop out melted the lead and poured it into the holes. Let it cool down and there were the sinkers ready to go. There was nothing pro like to it. But it sure did work for fishing. If needed to do again that's where I would go to the tire shop and ask. Maybe they would look at me funny to. So what that would not stop me.I think its a real good idea to make for your self what ever one can. That's just smart thinking. For me any ways.
+Thinking out side box It's not just about the casting bit. I've always wanted to melt a car battery. The last time I asked about getting wheel weights they looked at me like I was nuts. It's not like I want to melt the battery in my apartment. At a friends ranch (in Mexico) we always have huge bonfires. One guy brings those small propane tanks to watch them explode. They're usually good and drunk by that time.
+Sky Pup Buy the sounds of what you want to do. If I wanted to do something like that I would use wheel weights from rims. I,d go to some tire shops and ask them for some old used balance lead weights from the rims they balance. When the tire shops balance the new tire to the rims. They take off the old lead weights and don,t use them again. For the most part its scrap to them. They would more then likely give them to you or sell them to you real cheap. Scrap price cheap. Hope this helps.
+Thinking out side box Does the sulfuric acid explode or anything? Even if it's drained, would you have to rinse the crap out of it to make it safe? I just want some lead for fishing... it's not about the money. I just want to play with molding and lead is fun!
+Sky Pup That's about it. Some batteries are only partly lead. The lump would not be very big. There sure would be a mess. I would never tell any one to do it. Not a good idea.

@sok8888 EDTA was the 70's and this was found to have adverse effect on the
lead plates. They dissolved recent formed sulphate crystals but also
deposited a layer of coating on the good lead via chemical reaction of the
agent. Its like chemotherapy for cancer, you kill both good and bad cells
in your body. Hence after the 80's and onwards to the 90's, a far superior
and less destructive solution was pulse and signal frequencies, there is no
cause for worry in terms of electrochemical reaction.
Please make a timelapse (at best, with displayed time) to a complete
desulphate. During this, place a light source behind the battery. Mak a
measure (volt and capacity) before and after this process. At best with a
charge/discharge curve. Have you no such charger (with capacity
measurment), a light bulb and a Volteter leave connected parallel, and do a
time lapse (with displayed time). But turn out to 10.8 V.
Thank you very much! This video is just one of the ways we hope to educate
folks about pulse technologies which contributes to sustainable living in
view of the ever increasing consumerism problem.
Hi, The best info that I have checked out was on Volt daddy (just google
