I have a Volkswagen engine dot know what year on a sand rail It won't stay running unless I step on the gas Please comment below if u know what the problem ...
i'm going to assume it did idle before when i say this; idle circuit is
plugged. you need to take the carb apart and clean out all the jets, and
make sure there is no crud in the float bowl. definitely install a fuel
filter before the fuel pump otherwise you will have the same problem again
for sure. if you dont have a manual, you need to get one. there is one
called "how to keep your Volkswagen alive" that is great for beginners and
has step by step instructions.

1982 Rabbit 1.6 Diesel won't stay running. The engine is properly timed, fuel is flowing through the inlet hose, air has been bled. The car was timed incorrectly at ...
you have an air leak somewhere from the tank to the fuel filter housing
probly a pin hole in one of the lines sucking air in what i would do is
take the line off the fuel filter housing and put it in a can of diesel
fuel and start the car and see if it stays running if it does then you have
an air leak in one of your lines just had this same problem with a 1991
chevy pickup with a 6.2 diesel
Either you have a vacuum leak or your whole console isn't connected. Mine
did the same thing and when I would start it I would have to leave my foot
slightly on the gas to keep it alive but after just 2 short minutes It
would smoke under the hood. -1984 vw rabbit Wolfsburg edition
