This was a lot of fun to make! I'm sorry if anything was confusing, it's a lot of information to put into 13 minutes. You can buy horsehair braid from etsy or ebay!
Other people have already probably mentioned this, but you do say to
assemble the waistband outer fabric with wrong sides facing eachother, but
I think you mean right sides? You do it with right sides facing in in the
video. No biggie. But I love this video so very much! As always, you are
ridiculously talented. This will be helpful for so many cosplayers too!
Thank you so much Angela!
It was probably because you did the french seams later which involved sewing the fabrics wrong-side to wrong side. :) I can't wait to use horsehair braid in my next pattern! Thank you as always for the peaceful and informative tutorial.
+Morgan Weber Ahh I swear I watched this video through a dozen times and didn't catch that. Thanks for pointing it out - you're right, it's a mistake. I'll add in an annotation so people don't get confused. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for the kind words!
I've never made anything with horsehair braid and I really want to try
this. Is the process any different for a longer hem? Right above the knee
is where I typically like my skirts, do I need to find wider horsehair?
+jenifuhr I've never done it so I can't say for sure what the results would be like, but wider horsehair would definitely help. And using a stiffer fabric or reinforcing the fabric with interfacing would help the ruffles keep their defined shape.
+daniela rey I try to buy as much as I can in the garment district since the prices are so much better and there is a lot more to choose from. But I also buy some from online stores (usually onlinefabricstore.net) and from JoAnns. The fabric for this skirt was purchased from Joanns when the Spring/Summer collection was like 70% off.

The only thing I've ever sewn before is an apron, and I've darned socks. Do
you think this is too big of a project for me to take on? My Mum has a
lovely sewing machine I can use... which fabric is best for this type of
skirt and for a beginner? GREAT VIDEO BY THE WAY!
This is an awesome video....when I lived in Los Angeles 30 years ago, I use
to go to the thrift stores and buy my clothes. I always wore dresses from
the 40's. I loved the rhimestones on the top front of the dresses, with
heels. Thank you
Love Gertie! Took her bombshell dress class on craftsy.com and I'm so glad
I did. Learned a ton of new techniques and made a beautiful dress. I
preordered her book on amazon, can't wait 'til I get it!
Hello I have seen this 50s skirts were the skirt has fullness from top to
bottom, can I use horsehair braid from top to bottom, or how I get that
fullness without using tutu-like.
@kimismonkey Linda Skirt #8164 this is the Linda skirt - it can be found on
the isseweasytv website and also at burdastyle - you can't post links in
your replies!
Maybe you would be able to put links but like (3w's)(dot)google(dot)com...I
saw someone do that somewhere. lol. I'm so excited to find your YouTube

Gertie's Sewing Show, Episode 3: Inside a Vintage Dress
Let's look inside an amazing '50s era dress, complete with an inner corselet, boning, waist stay, built-in crinoline, horsehair braid and more. In collaboration with ...
may I enquire as to what Etsy store you purchased this from? I have a 22in
waist and I can't find any vintage replica stores that sell things in my
size. this looks as if it would genuinely fit me. I am not skilled enough
to sew my own clothes at this time so I would love to buy some still
wearable pieces.
I'm not sure how I missed this - probably by being busy when it came out
and YouTube not bothering to remind me... It's awesome to see how it goes
together when you don't have a chance to get your hands on such a dress
yourself! Thank you!
@poppa2006 - That's a very interesting thought, and one that I'll try, for
sure. I'm wondering if the silk organza would be able to turn and twist as
easily, however. Not sure -- just thinking about it. Yeah, the organza will
provide the stiffness, the support, but it probably wouldn't twist & turn.
The horsehair braid, while it is woven, allows the fibers to slide past
each other in a way that twisting and turning happens with no problem, all
while lending support. But I'll still try it!
@SuperModerngranny -Thank YOU for your nice comment! The horsehair braid I
used isn't really horsehair, it's a plastic version of it. This is the
stuff used: (they won't let me insert a link!) Here's a close-up pic of the
stuff. It's the one on the bottom, in this picture: (once again, no link.
Just google it under google images.) Just stitch it into hem, turn up hem &
tack as you normally would. Braid will be inside hem and is not visible.
Wow, thanks for sharing...I've never seen or used horsehair braid, so this
is great. I sewed a wedding dress recently and had to omit the horsehair
because it was not available, and because I didn't know how to apply it
anyway. Hope the bride would not complain too much. :(
Hi, an alternative to horsehair braid in the collar could have been silk
organza. A good quality silk organza doubled up would have provided the
same support.....I think!

I really like these little clips on notions. Very helpful stuff for the

OMG I tried to wait for the video but I wasnt sure what was going one with
the download. Visually this was the best video you made, the room seemed
brighter. I love your print. Stitching in the ditch for the waistband would
have been smarter but I was following the pattern instructions so I
slipstitched. I like your idea to use the horsehair braid. I have never
used that, and I didnt want to have to go back out to buy, so maybe on my
next skirt since I definitely plan to make this skirt again. So while I was
waiting for the video to load, I made my skirt. I think my fabric is pretty
nice. I started to get a little tired so I will do my hem tomorrow and post
a picture. Thanks for the inspiration of this series and I look forward to
the trousers next week.
thank you so much for your feedback that really helps me to grow so thank you . also very sorry about the delay ..this series has wooped my tail making all these videos but I'm so glad I did it ! tha KS for following alone and I can't wait to see your pics !!
