Kristie Lu Stout speaks to photographer Sim Chi Yin about migrant workers who live underground in Beijing.
+Nathan Clingan1. You hit the nail on the head with this one. My experience with Chinese Americans is much the same. They even think that China is comparable with Africa, and that there's nothing going for us until we get rid of communism. Most of their families abandoned China because of extreme poverty, violence, and other social ills associated to the 19th and 20th centuries. Unfortunately, they continue to carry that mindset today and it's difficult to convince them that modern China is completely unrecognisable to the one their families left. 2. I didn't mean that American media shouldn't discuss poverty abroad, when there's poverty at home. Sorry, I realised that I made a mistake with that one. What I mean is that they should make a greater effort to highlight poverty in California, Detroit, and other parts of the US. By generating interest in local challenges, viewers are more likely to organise themselves to make a difference. Showcasing poverty on the other side of the world is not quite the same, and it actually works against you. The average American is more likely to think that compared with China, we don't have a poverty crisis here. This means they're even less likely to act on the social ills in your backyard because "they can't be as bad as China."3. Allow me to simplify - you said that you don't think the 110 million figure is accurate because it was taken from the household census rather than individuals. However, the fact that you're spending nearly a trillion dollars a year on welfare suggests that 110 million recipients is about right. This is more than one-third of your population. You should all be worried. Research has proven that the children of welfare dependents are FAR MORE LIKELY to inherit welfare too.
+Shanghai Noon +Shanghai Noon Same to you! And belated greetings.I apologize, I just watched again and realized I got the names wrong--Kristie Lu Stout is the one apparently angling for morbidity, and the positive story I referred to is the one from the photographer. I don't recognize the anchor or the reporter, but it looks like American CNN after all. Anyway, as to your number 1, I agree. This is not just the media, it's America in general. We know about other countries from the people who left them to come here--people who left, in most cases, because they got the short end of the stick or in one way or another were looking for something else. Some of the worst things I have heard about China I have heard from Chinese immigrants, and for them, no doubt, it was true. Some of the worst opinions about Guatemala I heard from a second-generation Guatemalan who couldn't pronounce his name in Spanish and said he wouldn't go there if he was paid to. I don't think that gives us an excuse to badmouth other countries, but I think the phenomenon has an explanation. In all fairness is not just China, though. Whenever Mexico comes on the news, it's for bad news or scandal--the same for Russia, the Middle Eastern countries, or any country that gives the news something to talk about and people something to listen to. The issue I have with your comment, though, is threefold: first, I don't feel this story is primarily about poverty, but more about overcoming poverty, and in that sense, it constitutes a good example to those of us not inclined to indispensable.Second, if it were, I don't see how American poverty should make talking about others' poverty be off limits. I don't see an implicit comparison in this story, and it is very interesting to me that many Chinese, like yourself, do. Third, I don't quite understand your point. You mention 110,000M people on welfare as a negative thing, but then talk about income inequality as a negative thing, and mention the huge amounts of money spent on welfare as a negative as well. I'm not understanding the implications. Are you saying America is poor or rich? Should redistribute wealth or shouldn't? Receiving money from the government means you are poor or not? Or was there no real recommendation there at all?
+Nathan ClinganHi, great to hear from you again sir. I hope 2015 has taken off with a bang. 1. I thought this was CNN live? Isn't that American?2. I have lived in the US for nearly 2 years now, and the slant that your media takes towards China is very condescending. It's either poverty, corruption, the lack of human rights, or pollution. Although valid, there's a whole lot more to the country and we have made huge strides in all of those areas. 3. I'm afraid I don't agree with you. The US government admits to spending nearly a trillion dollars a year on welfare. This is more money than the overall GDP of most countries, and you spend it in just one year. I think CNN should be careful about highlighting poverty in developing countries, when the US has the highest income gap in all of the developed world. How often do they discuss poverty in America? Shedding light on local issues might do more to generate interest from people who can actually make a difference. Americans aren't going to watch this and suddenly decide to start donating towards charities in China. The media has a duty to raise awareness about issues that people can address on the ground, and American media isn't very good at doing that in my opinion.
1. Wasn't the reporter British? Her accent certainly wasn't American. 2. While the reporter seemed to be angling for some kind of horror story, Kristie Lu's actual story had more of a positive and even encouraging conclusion, I thought. Absolutely worth listening to. Chinese immigrants to Mexico live in a similar way for the first several years, then buy their own restaurants--this is well-known in Mexico, and we respect them for it. 3. The 110 million figure is slightly misleading, since it is taken from the Census Bureau's statement that "109,631,000 Americans lived in households that received benefits from one or more federally funded "means-tested programs."" In other words, if I lived in a household in which someone had qualified for aid in passing hospital bills for their chronic illness, I would be part of that number. Still a sad number, but the pixie it gives is misleading.
