Thank you for your truly interesting review! I had the privilege to read
this amazing novel twice, it made such an impact in my youth that it became
some kind of philosophical book for me, it was my bedside consultation
book. I would go as far to say that it shaped who I am and realizing it
gives me enormous joy . The first time I read it I took notes of the many
passages that are all over the book, spanning for religion, sciences,
history, psychology, etc. The depth of Tolstoy is just so vast and
mesmerizing that when it grabs you, you just want to stay in his grace.
+Omar Bedoya Hello Omar and thank you for sharing your experience, I am very happy to read that!!!! and you describe Tolstoy's style very well! I had almost the same experience with Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky - I was going back to it again and again to it, it impressed me so much I guess because I was a teenager ... :) Until last year I was pretty intimidated by War and Peace so it took allot of mental preparation before I started reading it, but it was an amazing book so I don't regret it, most probably will re-read it this year!
+mironadriana I chose to read it in English because it was easier :) I was already intimidated by the volume didn't want to add the language as a stress. Russian language has a much richer vocabulary and I would have needed a dictionary with me at all times. In English the language is simplified. I do have the goal to read it in Russian next year, for the moment this version was good for me :)
Brilliantly reviewed. I recently read it, and I was astonished how
effortlessly this man has woven history into his narrative. Favorite
character - Prince Andrew, Pierre Bezukhov, Natasha and Marya....did I just
named all the major characters ! :)
Malinka, thank you for your lovely reply. I want to know what you thought about the character Platon Karataev. He, in my opinion, embodied the unity of everything ; life and death, love and hatred, etc. He symbolizes the unity of all opposites, with no corners or edges. Just look at the way Tolstoy describes him so many times as 'round' or ' his roundness'. What do you think about him?
+Vikrant Thakur Thank you so much for the kind words!!! Yes, you named some of the most important ones but they are so unique, its impossible not to like them, for me, my favorite it will be Natasha, always!
I enjoyed War and Peace. The characters were so interesting and it made
history come alive. For me, the descriptions of war, the hunt, Pierre's
decision to become a Freemason and the scenes of war were overly detailed,
but the novel is beautifully written and gives the reader so much to think
about. I don't completely agree with Leo Tolstoy's portrayal of Napoleon.
He made mistakes in his attempts to conquer Russia, but he was a far more
capable leader than Leo Tolstoy was willing to admit.
+Les Zsoldos I'm really happy you read War and Peace and liked it! you must be as proud as I was. Of course, some parts were really slow :) About Napoleon - I was surprised Tolstoy gave him any credit at all and gave him a positive review!
