For the past couple years I've noticed a strong chemical smell coming from
my APC Back UPS XS 1000. This could have been there from the start, but I
only remember noticing it the past couple of years. The device is now
around 6 years old. It's always functioned perfectly and still shows 70
minute backup times at 16% load, so I'd hate to trash a completely
functioning device. I do find it odd that it's past the recommended replace
date and still holding a strong charge. Could the fact that the battery is
old cause a smell?
I've called APC and of course they play dumb and just suggest replacing the
unit with no other reason than it's out of warrantee. So is it normal for
these battery backups to emit odors? I have some health issues and am
nervous that maybe this device is contributing to my ailments. I never put
2 and 2 together, but you never know. I do notice that I sneeze a lot while
in my office. And people tell me my office smells like burnt plastic. It's
that smell that new electronics have, but the difference is that the smell
usually dissipates after a couple of days rather than never go away.
Should I just replace the battery itself or replace the entire device?
Anyone else experience similar issues with their device? I know they say to
replace the batteries at around 3-5 years, though it doesn't make sense to
if it's still holding a strong charge. I haven't received any beeps or
notifications telling me to replace it. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.
+graphicartdude Hi, The best info that I have read was on Volt daddy (just google it) I bet its the most useful info on batteries and this same that I have found.
