Fresh vs Dead – The Science of Scoring ft. Paul Rabil
All lacrosse heads break down over time. Using motion capture technology and advanced material analysis, we've identified what happens when a lacrosse ...
We welcome and anticipated your skepticism @Manlike Muffin. We're not
telling you that you need to replace your head - we're sharing data and
results from lab testing so everyone can make informed & educated
decisions. Like it or not, this is science and the information is real.
Plastic does break down over time... it's plastic and with extended usage
it becomes more malleable. As a result, the force of a shot causes head
deflection - heads bend backwards and the shape is distorted. Your head
might still work for you, but if you've been using it for multiple seasons,
the performance of the plastic has changed. We've all tweaked our pockets
and made micro adjustments to our shooting motion to compensate for the
difference and there is nothing wrong with doing that. We are only
providing information - what you choose to do with it is entirely up to
you. That said, if you're still skeptical, we invite you to come to a
testing location where you can see one of our testing devices and put your
head through the ringer. Testing Tour dates will be posted in the next few
weeks and the tour starts in May so stay tuned!
+Warrior Sports Cmon guys this is silly. I dont think that anyone is arguing that plastic does break down over time. However, that head was hardly what I consider "dead". Paul like many other professional players use a multitude of heads during the season so that stick was not in bad condition. Furthermore I have a hard time believing that Paul Rabil, someone who sends hundreds of hours shooting was inaccurate due to a slightly used stick. Maybe instead of having a stick that was lightly used for a season you could have a stick used for maybe 3 seasons. That is would be more realistic when it comes to replacing a head.
+Pat Griffin yeah maybe just a little... The lacrosse industry is milking money by overpricing products to compensate for the lack of advertising money because it isn't a big sport like football but i mean cmon $110 for a head is downright way to expensive, thank god for tribe7!
+String Cannon if the market bears the price, why would they reduce it? Supply and demand, bruh. If anything, quicker wear leads to higher prices - demand increase. Who's to say that a lacrosse head that lasts 2 seasons shouldn't be $200?
+Warrior Sports If you claim that your heads should not be used after a single season, why are they priced at $110? Shouldn't they be dramatically cheaper if they break down so quickly?
A flex shaft bends more predictably and it is designed to do so. With a 100% consistent shooting motion, there will be perfect accuracy. But since every shot is different in a game like scenario, that is almost never the case. Overhand, sidearm, low to high, quick sticks and time and room shots all apply different forces to your handle, and a flex shaft will bend to varying degrees based upon how the force is applied in your motion. With different types of shots come different flex patterns in a shaft and varying releases of the ball from your head depending on how you shot it. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as the shots will be consistent within their own categories (i.e. your sidearm shots will all cause the ball to release in a similar manner) but not have consistent releases with each other. Your stick might have very low "whip" when you shoot hard because the extra force forward from the flexing of the shaft helps the ball to escape from an otherwise whip heavy head. But when you go to pass, that same flex level is not achieved and the ball could go straight down. The point is that flex shafts throw many more variables into any player's throwing motion, and in a game where consistency is key, the added 5 MPH on a time and room rip may not be worth it.
