I never remember Catalina as being tropical like Gilligans Island was. In
June of 1965 when I was a kid out of 8th grade and I went by boat off
Catalina to my brothers scuba diving class., I could hardly believe how
cool it was. Of course they had wet suits for the scuba diving but I do
remember my jr. high snd high school graduation months of both June 1965
and June 1969 as being downright cool on the mainland and July 2010 and
1993 were quite cool too as well as 1st half of Aug 2013 !
The weather has gone from being awesome (To lots of folks) to downright
disappointing (To me of course) in a very short distance. Looking at
yesterday's data i see that some areas have been seeing not only very
exciting thunderstorms, but also very hot and humid weather right to the
coast. Avalon yesterday had a maximum of 93 and a minimum of 77! That is
like a classic east coast summer heat wave. Even San Diego was in the upper
80s. While here the maximum was 73 and the minimum 58!
Maybe that song was in reference to the good old days of summer warmth we
used to see regularly years back. Looking at a color coded map of
Thursday's maximums i noticed the oranges and reds reached the coast from
about Santa Monica south while the light yellow indicating much cooler
temperatures extended west of the mountains from Seattle all the way down
to you guessed it, the Ventura County coast!
I don't know about the sharks preference for this weather LOL but it's 71
degrees at the NWS Oxnard at 5am, not too shabby, and clear at this hour
LOL no light snow falling at Pt. Mugu but one problem is it's getting so
late and today is the final day of meteorological summer. It would have
been nice to have these conditions dominate the 3 summer months June
through August.
Yes, i forgot to mention both the maximum yesterday and the minimum this
morning are about the best we have seen here so far this season. I do not
mind these conditions continuing through September, but no later than that!
Of course wet suits are required for these waters even during warm summers!
LOL The slogan for this area should be Since sharks do not have wet suits
you do not have to worry about sharks here!
