Eldon gives an update on his small meat-rabbit farming operation, giving lots of information about raising rabbits in the winter months. Topics discussed include ...
We are considering getting rabbits. Please tell me more about the nesting
box. We live in WI. and would likely bring them in once we see freezing
weather. Otherwise we will have them sheltered somewhat outside. How do
you know if you have a doe? Any particular kind I should get for our first
meat rabbits? How much feed does a doe, buck eat? How long till babies
come? Do you keep the doe and buck together at all? I guess more on all
that process. Thanks. I have watched a few videos and I like yours the
best.
+Theresa Krout I have some other videos on my channel about nest boxes - including how to build, prepare, and when to put them in the cage. A doe who is regularly having babies will eat a lot of food - I give them as much as they want. Bucks don't eat much and must be rationed or they will get too fat. Determining the gender of the rabbits is something I've found very challenging. Watch other videos and instructions online. I have to wait until they are 5 or 6 weeks old and sometimes I still get it wrong. My adult bucks and does are kept separately, which is pretty standard practice. I put the doe in with the buck only when it's time for her to be bred, and the process usually happens immediately upon putting her in there. I allow the buck to complete the process three times (probably takes about three minutes total) and then remove the doe and put her back in her cage. New Zealand rabbits are some of the most popular meat rabbits. I have broken black New Zealands. But there may be other good breeds as well, but I don't have enough knowledge on that to tell you which ones.
+Johnathan Davidson Johnathan, I have granted your request with an update video, now that the second litter has been born. The video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkKnJ2GXC6U Enjoy!
+Johnathan Davidson I will try to do that. Hopefully this time it goes as well it as did with her first litter. Thanks for the comment!
