The first, and to date still the deepest renewal of the Champion Stakes
that has been run at Ascot since the race was moved there from Newmarket in
2011. 8 of the 12 horses that went to post that day either already were or
would become Group 1 winners, 7 of the 8 multiple G1 winners(Cirrus Des
Aigles, So You Think, Snow Fairy, Midday, Nathaniel, Twice Over, & Wigmore
Hall). Casamento was the only 1-time G1 winner in the field. The other 4
horses that went to post that day(Green Destiny, Sri Putru, Ransom Note, &
Dubai Prince) either already were or would become multiple listed, G3,
and/or G2 winners of some form or fashion. 12 horses with those kind of
credentials in the same field makes for a rather competitive race.
Fair comment GB. For mine athe 13 days between a stiff 12F of the Arc
(remember that Danedream won in the fastest time in the 90 editions of the
race) and a truly run 10F (albeit on his preferred going) was always going
to produce a dour conveyance on the day. I suspect that had he not raced in
the Arc (and I'm glad he did) the outcome could have been different...
although not significantly so given the proximity of Snow Fairy...
in the geelong cup Dunaden had top weight and in the vase the field was
horrendous, aus racing past a mile is lightyears away fom the standard in
europe.
