William Dawson, the conductor, was one of the most distinguished choral conductors of the 20th Century and one of the most prolific arrangers of Spirituals. His works are still among the favorites of concert, school and church choirs all over the world. He . like F. Nathaniel Dett, was very interested in using Negro Folk Songs as material in extended forms and wrote a Negro Folk Symphony that was premiered by Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1933. There are several contemporary recordings of his symphony. He chaired the music department at Tuskegee Institute/University from 1931-55. I have the LP of this work but no time to locate it now. The contralto soloist, Carol Brice, I worked with and knew well. The tenor, John Miles, was a close friend. You can find the name of the other soloist by googling the work or searching on Amazon.com.The only problem with this recording is that the orchestra is a pickup orchestra, not a resident professional one. The music is very interesting. Dr. Eugene Thamon Simpson
