Ah Ok, ich verwende zusätzlich zur DosBox das eigens dafür entwickelte und
kostenlose Fontend D-Fend Reloaded. Damit kann man ohne ne Config-Datei
schreiben zu müssen eine Datenbank anlegen und braucht, die richtigen
Einstellungen vorrausgesetzt, seine Dos-Spiel nur noch aus ner Liste zu
wählen.
Long story short, I've actually played through this game and beat it. It's
probably one of the longest DOS games I ever come across because there is
literally no less than a couple dozen cutscenes along with a keen eye for
detail. There was so much detail put into this game. Not so much in the
graphics (although even some of the graphics like the characters themselves
looked quite good for the time), but the story, the character dialogue, the
mystery and suspense in it all, etc. Even right clicking on the currencies
(gold sovereigns and silver royals) has a detailed description. You can
literally spend hours upon hours just reading through all the text in this
game. It's quite fascinating.
It's a real tragedy that not many people know about this. Even back in
1993-1994 it couldn't compete with things like DOOM, which single-handedly
changed everything to where adventure and RPG games on the PC were put to
the back burner. Basically it's much easier to design a game based on
killing anything in your path with almost no story. Raymond E Feist put a
lot of work into his novels, and I can imagine Neal Hallford spent a lot of
time writing the story for this game.
Betrayal at Krondor was truly a real gem. I hope in the near future to do a
Let's Play on this game, and it's not bad for starting out for a Let's
Player. There's really not many games left at this point in time that
haven't already been done on Youtube, and this game in particular has
already been done by a few people. But I suppose I could fill in seeing
that I've actually played through the first three chapters in BaK no less
than five-six times, so I already have a good bit of experience.
Everything that John is saying here is true and I agree completely.
It was a cold and drizzly night in 1994. A rainhooded teenager (let's call
him 'Pirate Roy') handed me a couple of floppies wrapped in a plastic bag,
I snuck into my Father's 486DX2 and installed a revelation! The following
days were grey as funerals, and the muffled sound of the Betrayal
Adlib-intro mixed with the singing of crows and blackbirds from of my open
window. The Moredhel word locks? I feel like a fecking Dino dodging a comet
saying this: It was a pain without internet.
I've never played or watch this game before. I sure have missed you and
your LP's, and the sound of your voice though! Great to see and hear you
are back, Tom! I have heard good things about this game. I hope it doesn't
prove to be too frustrating, given its reputed difficulty. Any roleplaying
game that has you operating with a party that never gets larger than 3 can
be difficult, considering you lose a third of your force every time someone
goes down. Scary!
I've been on a total old games binge of late on GoG.com so I really love
watching LPs of games like this. Plus I've heard loads of great things
about it and it'll be cool to finally see what the fuss is about. Also,
thanks for doing this introductory video, showing us how all the menus work
and such. It really helps keep track of what's going on in the game, even
when you're just watching it.
And I'm looking forward to your comments! I guess there are going to be a
few spoilers, but not too many. First of all, I've only played about the
first third of the game, the rest is going to be blind. And second, this
game is open enough for every playthrough to be different. It only takes me
a few videos to stumble into areas I've never been to before. So I think
we'll be fine :-)
Thanks, buddy - it feels good to record stuff again, and as always I'm
happy about your company! The game's just awesome - it can get frustrating,
but never so much that it spoils the fun, it's mostly just a bit of a
challenge, which really doesn't hurt. It's also got an amazing story and a
really fun combat system, I hope I can do those aspects justice in the LP.
I was introduced to this series with Return to Krondor, unfortunately,
because when I tried Betrayal at Krondor to get the story I couldn't get
into the DOS-ness of it. : P I also tried reading the books but...not that
good I don't think... : / But maybe I can watch this LP and get the story
w/o having to play through myself ^_^
Personally, I think the fuss is more than justified. If this gets boring,
go ahead and blame me, because the game itself is really addictive. Yeah,
about the menus, I might have overdone it, but I do like it myself if a
game that I'm not familiar with is explained a bit to me in LPs. Enjoy!
I believe the GOG version and the CD-ROM version which came out in 1994 had
the slightly different music and sounds. This version that the LP is using
as far as I know is the free download version, which contains the initial
DOS sounds and music, which actually sounds a lot better.
Just found your channel a few hours ago and I've been watching. Great
videos, very glad to have found you and subscribed! PS: Great taste in
games!!! Daggerfall!? Krondor?! KOTOR?! Neverwinter Nights?! Baldur's Gate
2???!!!! Were you TRYING to LP some of my favorite games??? :D
Very cool to hear fromyou again, Eivind - had I known that this choice of
game would lead to such euphoric outbursts of nostalgia, I'd have played it
a lot sooner. Oh, and expect some very tedious wordlock-solving (or at
least attempts in that direction) in the future :-)
"DOS-ness" should definitely be a word, it applies to a lot of things in
everyday life, when you think about it :-) And I hope you have fun! You
should definitely try to get back into it, though - once you've eased in,
it's got a really addictive quality to it.
Nice! Always happy to see some old school games played by interesting
individuals, and when it's a game I haven't actually played myself it's
just an added bonus. Oh, and a warm welcome back from your hiatus too.
Out of curiosity, is this game related to "Return to Krondor"? I remember
playing that as a youngster... never really understood the story as I'd
never been to Krondor to return there! Good viewing as always :)
Yes, "Return" is the direct sequel to this, as far as I know - I never
played it, but I've heard bad things about it. This one, however, is
absolutely fantastic! And thanks, glad you're enjoying it :-)
I'm one of those you don't know yet :) Great game, looking forward to
watching the LP as you play it. Krondor is such an open game, it'll be
interesting to see someone else play through it.
Cool that you're back! Sadly it's not going be too much catching up I
think, but at least I manage to stick to my promise of 1 hour of footage
per week minimum.
Welcome back Tom! Great to see content from you again, can't wait to get
home and watch this (; how interesting that you come back at the same time
as me haha
Oh I think I shall! From the little I've seen it looks like my kind of
thing: Daggerfall with less brain melting!
Let's Play Betrayal at Krondor - 001: Introduction and Basics
I have decided to do a playthrough of this after a long time of deciding not to. I'm going to play through the entire game like this. I will comment through text on ...
Glad to hear you like it, always makes it alot more worthwhile uploading
these.:) BaK is definitely a great game, a pity we will probably never see
another game like it because of how the video game industry is these days
Let's Play Betrayal at Krondor #2
in which there's looting to be done! The gang has chest on their minds...
I really enjoy how you go into detail about the features, spells and
buttons. Personally it irritates me when someone decides to jump right in a
game without really explaining what something is, they assume you've played
the game when you may of not played it or it's been well over a decade
since you did. Despite knowing this game quite well (and being able to go
through the first three chapters rather easily) it's still good for me to
learn a few things here and there, even if they're basic.
One thing to take note is recording video can be a drain on your computer,
which makes everything, including the game slow down.
The combat is similar to fallout's Are you planning on playing Fallout 1 or
2?
