If P and W knew anything about turbomachinery they wouldn't have to gear
down the fan of course it takes alot more know-how to map a turbine stage
to the fan then making a gear reduction unit. The AV industry has been
using gear reduction systems for a hundred years. And, what happened to the
plastic fan? RR has been using a hollow TiT fan for years and then suddenly
PW says oh, we can do that but they are using AL alloy from the 1940s with
the Titanium. Make mine all Titanium and forget about the gear drive.
I remember when I was a PhD student at Michigan Tech( Madonna Univ ) a PW
recruiter came to my office and said if I wanted a job at PW I had to suck
