It's interesting that the gates close when the train is only ?250 meters? away! In Romania gates close before the train enters the signal block(2-3 kilometers away), if the gates fail to close (or are disturbed or moved - pushed ) the signal in the block changes to Danger (Red) and the train has to stop.

In the USA the train horns are used a lot as additional warning. Some people still cross the tracks when the arms are down.
