Mark Hamill interview on set of Star Wars
Early interview with Mark Hamill on the "Death Star" set of Star Wars. This is the only interview I've ever seen with Mark that took place before the 1976 car crash ...
I'm a big Harrison Ford fan, but if you've ever seen Mark's work on stage,
or took time to notice his recent roles and brilliant voice-work, you'll
see that he's clearly the best actor of the three. Ford is clearly a
classic leading man, but Mark has enormous range as an actor that the
mainstream public seems blind to because of Star Wars. Being a leading man
is great for the bank account, but you'll find that with a few exceptions
(Brando being the major one) most leading men and women usually aren't the
best actors from a pure artist perspective.
The difference in Hamill's face compared to after his accident is nothing
short of dramatic. In this interview, which is pre-accident, he has an
astounding masculine beauty; following the accident, this look has vanished
and his features somehow seem altered, as if he is another person. Yes, he
looks okay after the accident, but nothing like he looked before.
Yes, it's true that people's faces change with time, but the change in Hamill from Star Wars (1977) to Empire Strikes Back (1980) is profound, and cannot be because of the passing of three years time. The change in his appearance is obviously due to facial damage. His nose, mouth, and facial shape have all been altered, and the change is significant.
+CoolDrify Mark Hamill never had facial reconstruction surgery. In a 1977 interview he said he just slammed on the brakes and hit his nose against the windshield.
+CoolDrify Same. I tried to look up pictures of Mark Hamill from before and after the accident, but I really can't see that much of a difference, yet every time I've been watching either Star Wars Ep. 5 or 6 people have pointed it out like it's the most obvious thing. I don't get it. Still a beautiful man (even to this day).
+Gillian Campbell He was indeed "disfigured." A disfiguring injury is one that permanently alters your appearance---his nose was never able to be returned to its original appearance. Also, he had injuries to his upper lip (he STILL has visible scars) a fractured cheekbone and broken teeth.
