As quarter mile times get less, power needs to increase dramatically, a 200hp air cooled Beetle is nothing compared to this, 3 seconds faster is a lot.
Subaru VW Bus Mountain Drive - Busaru engine conversion Part 13
Take a drive with me in the bus going up a mountain - well, sort of. I blaze up some back roads, some off-road trail, and some highway. All of this is filmed ...
Well, I offer some parts (Boxerswaps.com) then you can get the adapter plate and exhaust from KEP. Most of the Vanagon swap items translate over to the bus.
Hey man just subscribed...i like that conversion..its getting popular now i
see...are u going to keep the stock 4 speed or u are u going with a 5 speed
eventually? Nice job on the swap
Hey man, i always enjoy these videos, and have been wanting to do this
conversion in my '65 13 window deluxe bus.. What i'm wondering is 1: can i
use my stock swing axle trans with an adaptor? Do you think it would hold
up under normal day to day driving?, And 2: About how many miles would i
expect to get out of a Subaru flat 4? also a turbo flat 4....Thank you for
the great videos!!
Hey Andrew, I wish I had more knowledge on the older busses but I'm afraid I can't really offer advice on the swing axle trans. I think it would work very similarly but a transmission crossmember might be recommended so that its like a later bay window bus. You'd also want to check into the gear ratios to make sure they're similar to the Vanagons and later Bays. As far as the actual transmission to engine adapter - that should fit no problem. The miles that you can expect would depend on maintenance, how its driven, etc. Subaru's are known to be pretty long lasting - its not uncommon to see them hit 300K on a Legacy with a simple 2.2L engine. The EJ22 turbo's are "closed deck" engines meant to handle boost, and feature all kinds of cool stuff like piston oil squirters - driven reasonably this engine should be able to last the same. The WRX turbo engines are semi closed deck, I believe, and are smaller displacement (2.0L) but pack a ton of power due to high boost. I have seen a couple clock around 250K but haven't put a lot of research into this engine as of yet. Thanks for watching!
How much lower do you estimate the oil pan is than the stock engine? If I
remember right your carrier that you had fabricated hangs about as low as
your oil pan. Do you plan to add any kind of skid plate to protect the
pan?
Hey Jeremy, I'll have to measure for you when I get a chance, I've thought about doing a skid plate off of the crossmember. Maybe I'll do that at some point but probably not on this bus. I may shorten the oil pan on this beast, we'll see.
Turns out that it was a wildlife closure for the season. Thats one of my favorite peaks around town to hike and I see quite a bit of wildlife so I'm stoked to see they closed it for now.
Subaru Engine Prep - Busaru Engine Conversion Part 6
In this video I go over the installation of the adapter plate and clutch equipment, as well as a few items that are of concern when putting a Subaru engine into a ...
Hey how's it going, I'm completely new to all of this stuff I have a 72 vw
Riviera that's manual and I'm planning on purchasing a 92 subaru legacy
that's automatic, would I need to buy a different computer since I'm going
from an automatic subie to a manual vw transmission? Is it even possible?
Thanks for your time
Hey Mach, the computer doesn't care which trans it's mated to. The auto uses a transmission control unit that you cut away from the harness but that's about all the difference there is.
isn't the transmission of T2 same with vw beetle 1303? i was planning to
convert my vw 1303 to boxer diesel. but i know it has to have conversion
when it comes to transmission and engine installation. is that adaptor
plate also available here in the philippines? did you custom ordered it or
something?? thanks. love your documentary.
+Busaru thanks i'll visit their page. by the way i was i bit bothered of the width and length of subaru ee20. does the size difference is too much? i was bothered i may cut too much to my 1303. thanks.
Thanks for the compliments. Your transmission should have the same bolt pattern as the buses. I would order the adapter plate from Rocky Mountain Westy or KEP. I'm sure they can ship to the Philippines, it'll probably just be expensive. Good luck on your swap!
+william dobson Subaru gearboxes are fantastic. If you've ever driven one, you know they shift super smooth (most of the time) and are geared well. I've never installed one in a VW though, and the SubaruGears kit is VERY expensive, so I'd love to hear your thoughts if you decide to go that direction.
Is that the 2.0? If so you'll be around 125 HP or so. I'd drive it gently until you find an 091 transmission. I would wait on wheels until you drive it and see what the gearing is like. I don't drive 75 so I'm okay with stock gearing.
Gauge Install For Subaru - Busaru Engine Conversion Part 10
Follow along as I install the gauges and cable into the VW Bus for the Subaru engine conversion. I use a 4 inch multi gauge that contains a tachometer, voltmeter ...
Hi Mick, please can you help me with some advice. Does this gauge work
directly from the ECU signal wire? I tried another gauge and it was not
compatible with the signal wire. I like the fact that this is a multi
gauge. I see you have to use an adaptor to connect the oil pressure sensor
and that it comes with oil and water temp sensors. Do these have to be
fitted in addition to the sensors that go to the ecu? Any advice would be
appreciated , cheers Mark
Hey Mark, I've decided that I don't really like these gauges too much. They aren't extremely accurate. Any gauge you select will use senders - for example, the water temp and oil pressure senders need to be installed for that particular gauge. The tach signal from the ecu is the only thing that doesn't need a sender.
Hey Mick, thanks for the videos, they are super helpful! So I picked up
this gage for my EJ22 - air cooled conversion and tried mounting the oil
pressure sender in the stock position on the block under the alternator,
but it interfered with the alternator. I looked all over for another port
but couldn't find one. Is this where you mounted your sender?
So I dug a little further and found that in my engine prep video you can see the Tee that I used. Its about 13 minutes in on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seCWxXik42g
Hey Kory, That's where I mounted mine but you're right, the sending unit is too big to mount vertically, you have to either get a 90* bend and attach or use a tee fitting which will allow you to also run the stock Subaru oil pressure switch to your oil indicator lamp on your dash.
Just watched the whole series. Very thorough for one that has spent years
getting greasy on Type I, II, IV and most recently a Thing. Great video,
great editing and very informative. Just put a 1.9 liter VW in my Thing
and have no expectations of a Subaru update, but have always loved the
engine swap vids on YouTube. When I had my '79 Campmobile I had dreams of
a Wankel in it with a turbo. Like John Muir (of VW fame, not the
naturalist) said, "If you want a car that drives like a Porsche, buy a
Porsche" but the Bus has always had a HP deficit and I get putting a little
more go in the back. Great series. Thanks!
Thanks for the compliments. I, too, love engine swaps in general. I've been specifically interested in Megasquirt controlled turbo swaps lately - fascinating stuff. Dream on my friend!
hey for the multigauge, try using a silicone boost coupler and a couple of
T clamps to hold it up. Slip the boost coupler over the back of the gauge
hole, clamp it down, and then slip the gauge into the silicone tube and
clamp it in as well.
Hey Jessica, the gauge is NOT compatible with the Subaru oil pressure switch. The gauge comes with an actual pressure sender that you use in place of, or in conjunction with, the Subaru pressure switch.
