The Napier Delta diesels were 3 banks in a Y configuration, 18 cylinders,
36 pistons in a 6 crankshaft design that was good for power but terrible
reliability and they only lasted a fraction of their design life. The USN
used them in the river boats and they were terrible.
The Napier 'Deltic' engines were not a Y configuration but a Delta cylinder configuration, ie , with a crankshaft on each of the 3 corners of the cylinder banks . The 2 stroke diesel engines being of an Aluminium construction gave a tremendous power to weight ratio over the normal fast patrol boat engines of that era and were designed to be easily exchanged should an engine failure arise , the exchanged engine then being repaired at a land based facility . We used the Napier Deltic engines over here in the UK in the locomotive of the same name , these were used on the East coast rail route from London to Edinburgh. 21 of these locos were built and served the service well for over 20 years , six of the class are preserved and run regularly on preserved railways and main line 'enthusiast special' workings to this day .Cheers .
The keel was laid and the boat built in 1957 at the Kockums shipyard,
Stockhlom Sweden. The boats' engines are 2 cycle, 18 cylinder diesels. The
lines of this boat are surprisingly similar to the proven design of Andrew
Jackson Higgins' Patrol Torpedo (P.T.) Boat that the U.S. operated during
WW-2.
I've seen some of the videos of T-56 and would love to go for a ride with
the throttles wide open!!!
The T42-series (T42-T56) was built 1956-1959, and was an improved version of the T32-series and designed by Kockums. It is not a copy of the US boat, rather influenced by the British and Italian design. The Swedish T26 series was developed in 1941 same time as the PT boats but there are no particular relations between these types.
Thats sounds lik a gas engine? V-12 packard? Those boats got 3 engines 12
cyl each they run on 100+octane petro! 7500c.i. total thats 36 big ass
pistons!
And you are a flaming liberal,if you really believe that little smoke makes a difference. That smoke represents all the veterans who fought and lived and died for you to be FREE .
