Vintage Carvin X100B (EL34 Carpeted Version) Demo by Jason Waggoner
This is a demo for a 90-94 model Carvin X100B by Jason Waggoner All Tube Head (EL34 Version) played through two 12" Celestions Set on 25% power, lead ...
Thanks for the great discussion. How do you tell what series it is? I would
love to know what mine is. Since I posted this I found an original matching
cab. I know there is tons of new stuff out there, but to me Carvin nailed
it with this cab. I just had the head benched and had the cab checked out,
this thing is like brand new and I can't get enough of it.
@kuhny2191 WOW 50$?!?!?! hahaha, dude it's probably the best deal you'll
get in your entire life haha. It's worth alot, some guys bought it for
1000$ the average price seems to be 600$ and my friend and I found one for
450$ only can't wait!! getting it today :) It's a high quality amp and so
much versatile!
$500 for a complete half stack isn't bad at all. Do you know roughly what
year? These things have some great history. I love the story, of all the
models they've been through they had to bring back the X100B, its classic
sound is incredible.
Merci
I think that it should be miked especially if you play with a drummer. But
this amp is quite loud if you crank it (up? not sure of my english here).
So for 50 people it can be enough if you play with a "gentle" drummer but
for 100 people mike it and if your drummer is like "heavy and punchy type"
mike it ;-)

Carvin PB5 - Full Demo
Ed Friedland - The Bass Whisperer demonstrates the Carvin PB5 bass.
I have taken the plunge and ordered one of these. Slightly different color
scheme but same pickup configuration, fretboard, etc. I am sure you do your
own setups and everything but how was this one right out of the box?
sdushiu has reply turned off I guess... But to address his comment about
reviews being dominated by pick and percussive styles... That may be true
in general, but if you have noticed... I always demo a bass using finger
style, pick style, and slap. I personally love to slap, and so yeah... I
use that sound a lot in my demos, but only if the bass is suited to that
sort of thing. For example.... I never slap in a fretless demo. Anyway, no
offense taken by your comments, I realize it's not possible to accommodate
everyone's preferences... try as I may!
Hi Ed ~ As usual, this is a fantastic demo. In your opinion, would the PB4
have more punch, low end and responsiveness over a Carvin neck thru? I own
a LB70 four string and a Bromberg B5, for some reason I've never gone
bolt-on with a Carvin. I'm asking this because as seems to be my norm, I'm
eyeing up the new Xccelerator four string, yet another 24 fret bass.
Perhaps I should change my ways...lol. Thanks and again, love all your
reviews!
Well, in general terms yes. Bolt-ons are by nature "punchier" than neck-throughs, but there are always exceptions. I think the PB is a great example of the P Bass platform... if all you play is neck-throughs... maybe it's time for some variety? I think the Xccelerator looks very interesting, but the headstock is a deal breaker for this old guy! ;)
Great demo, as usual! I'm curious about 2 things: was the Streamliner run
flat, as you usually do + how did this 5 string P Bass compare to the Mike
Lull? I'm in the market for a good 5 string P + would love your
input/opinion! Thanks!
Being a longtime Fender guy, it sounds like the Lull might be the way to go for me. Although, I'm sure it would probably cost at least 2x as much as the Carvin! I've been to Mike's shop many times, he's got really nice basses, but they're not cheap. You do get what you pay for, though. I think the 35" scale would help that B string really ring out, too. Thanks for the insight!
I don't remember the specific settings on the amp... but usually I run the Bass at 9:00, Mids flat and treble flat. I may have messed with the miss a bit, don't remember. This is a nice bass. Compared to the Lull? Well, the Carvin has a more modern vibe, the neck plays more like a hotrod boutique, where the Lull feels more like a Fender... chunky, rounder, more primitive. The Lull is 35" scale - which changes a lot about the response. The Carvin pickup is a bit grindier compared to the Nordy I have in the Lull. The Lull to me feels more like a passive Fender while the Carvin feels more like a "souped up" P bass. I like both for different reasons.
Great demo as usual, Ed. Say, will you be reviewing the new Carvin JB5
Classic Bolt-Neck 5-String Jazz Bass anytime soon? And if so, will you
compare it to the Carvin SB5000 and maybe even a Fender American Deluxe
Jazz V? I know you don't usually do shoot outs but I think most of us
Carvin guys would really dig. Thanks!
Great review, great bass! I hear ya on that 18 volt preamp. I wish Carvin
would offer a 9 volt option. It's almost too big a sound, plus I'd rather
deal with just one battery. That's just me though.
+Bass Whisperer TV Guess I really have to sit down with one and take it for a test drive. I have an early 90's 2 band, LB6 Fretless I really love. Almost really doesn't need that mid range, but I usually get that from my amp if needed. Thanks again for the review and your input!
Hey Ed, I saw your review of the Fender Precision 5 string which you gave
high marks and I was wondering, if you could only have one, would you
choose the Fender P Bass 5 or a Carvin PB5? I know you can get the PB5
active/passive for around the same money. Do they feel much different? What
would make you pick one over the other?
I won't choose for you. But I'll say that the Carvin has a much stronger and clearer B string than the Fender, at least between the two basses that I played. The neck profile on the Carvin is wider and flatter, so that may or may not be your preference - the Fender neck is narrower and rounder.
Thanks for the Demo Ed!! Love your stuff... I'm assuming that the whole
demo was through your amp... I would have liked to have heard it direct...
I'm still wanting one of these basses... Thanks for all you do!!
Yes, I always record the bass coming out of the amp, and I play LOUD! Just like you want to! I figure that's the way you're going to hear the bass when you play it...
I think this sounds very nice, but I wish Carvin had a better
representation in The Netherlands. Heck, the Dutch Carvin website hasn't
even been updated since 2012, so it doesn't feature the JB or Vanquish
series.
+ron bZoom I have a EBMM Bongo 6 that I've been using for 4 years, and I pretty much consider it the benchmark for a 6 string bass guitar [based upon 28 years of playing a myriad of basses]. That being said, I'm VERY interested in the Vanquish 6. It is so intriguing that I am eyeing one that they have currently in stock for immediate availability.
+dcjazz5 I feel the same way. The single coils have a brighter and more clear sound, although a little thinner. Can always work with that though if there's a little EQ available from the bass or amp. Just ordered the VB5 with the singles, same as the Vanquish bass.
Great playing, though I personally don't do alot of slap, I thought the
tine was pretty good, though I'm mostly a passive guy. If I could I'd have
the pull be to active, and the push to passive, as opposed to vise-versa.
However I was wondering if the eq still worked in passive mode im new to
bass, If i bought this it'd be my second bass (my current is a squire
affinity J). I'm confident i can get the 60s 'boom' I'm looking for,
without sacrifing that 70s vintage tone. I'm really gassing for this bass,
not t mention saving up my money. I'd buy her in mahogany with a
+GodsBass I have usually had good service from them. Even outstanding at times. Curious about the PB5. I have one too. I yanked their preamp and installed a John East in mine. Not hard to do, but $325. Love the bass now. There wasn't anything wrong with their pre, I'm just so used to the East that I couldn't help myself. :-)
I purchased the Carvin PB5 in Feb of this year, it is a great bass when its working. I had issues with my design and had to send it back, then the electronics had to be changed so it went back a second time. And two weeks ago I had to pay $100 to send it back again because something is wrong with the electronics. I am having issues getting someone from Customer Service to give me an update. So I havn't had all the warm fuzzies with my Carvin expierience.
I own three Carvin basses, though not one of these yet. You can't go wrong with a Carvin bass. Buy one...or more. You'll thank me later.I use their amplification as well. Good stuff! Yes, I am a Carvin whore.
