Rooted Nook Simple Touch Apps Preview: Mango Manga Reader, Kobo, Kindle, Overdrive, PDF
This is just a quick video of me using a rooted Nook Simple Touch for 6 minutes. I show off the Amazon Kindle app, the Kobo app, the Overdrive Library app, ...
Ok - iRajiv - I have a dilemma here - I bought the NST just a few months
ago - but really wanted an Amazon Touch, which of course, was not in
existence until today. I have to do something about this Nook ST / Kindle T
conflict here. I do not care about anything else, but being able to get the
Kindle app on my Nook, as I buy most of my books from Amazon- how do I do
this - and is is safe? Can I revert back to stock software if I need to?
And does rooting it make it less smooth or anything? Thanks
great... you show that it can flip through pages in a comic, which is great
to know if you only like to read a portion of each page. what if you like
to read the *whole* page? is there a way to zoom? also, PDFs seem to load
up fine as a whole page, but what if you can't read 4pt. font? is there a
way to zoom in? people keep posting about all these great things they can
do with a rooted whatever, but why not actually describe (or in youtube's
case: show) how USEABLE it actually is.
@weregoingunion it's an 800x600 6 inch screen, you can't read it clearly if
it's set to show the full page, that's why I show the individual panels. As
for PDF's, there's a few different apps out there that do PDF, but because
it doesn't have a multitouch screen it doesn't always work well. You can
reflow the text but it most time screws with he formatting. I'll do a video
just for you this week, and PM you the link when it's up.
@iRajiv you can easily just reformat using calibre, not a big problem. and
yeah besides the DRM i don't rly see a point. i have a 16GB sd card for it,
which is more than enough for an e-ink reader. but its a e-ink reader, not
an iphone. you might have apps on it but u wouldnt enjoy using the apps b/c
the screen will be too blinky all of the time. plus i bought a 2 year
warranty for $20. if i root it my warranty is void :/
@iRajiv awesome, thanks. I think I've finally given up on the eInk readers
for my purposes though. I have an iPad to read the PDFs and don't really
need another device laying around unless it really would completely solve
my PDF reading problem. I have all of my schoolbooks in PDF and because we
need to know which page numbers to read, the whole reflow or PDF->ebook
thing doesn't sound very convenient. thanks though!
@13Keepers It's a little tricky to do if you're new to Android rooting, but
yes if you make a backup before you start changing stuff you can revert
easily. On YouTube search for "how to root nook simple touch" by a user
named "TheeBookReader". He posts the XDA links in his video. If it's too
complicated for you sell it and get the Kindle Touch, it's much cheaper and
the Nook's haven't dropped in price yet to match
Excellent video! A few questions though.. About the Kobo App, does the
Reading Life feature on it work properly? I have a question about the manga
reader too. Is text readable with images fitted to the height/width of the
device, or is the screen just too small/not sharp enough for that? Whenver
you have the time, I'd also like to know whether or not the AnkiDroid
Flashcards app works. Thanks!
@geekylolitadress the Kobo app really doesn't work that well. I'll have to
do another video this weekend that shows it. Out of all my books, only one
worked, the rest give that error that's shown in the first book. Until a
rom gets released, this won't be fixed. But yeah, the manga reader text is
visible, I'll show it more off this weekend and actually record audio
@myuzakitheglitcher it works fine. Some pages you have to scroll down as
well as left and right, but I wasn't doing that in the video. I've made
another video where I show the Mango app a little bit more, check out my
channel becuase I can't post the link. As for Mango Bankai? Can't seem to
find that app in the Market, sorry!
@cool08player If you make a backup of your Nook before you do any hackery
you can restore it and keep your warranty still alive, but to each his own.
I had an old Kobo, so the blinking every page doesn't bother me. Besides
the stock reader, I mainly use it for the Kindle and Overdrive apps.
@sfreeman1987 that's a drawback of e-ink screens. If you're using the built
in reader app with the Nook, it only fashes once every 7 pages. Other apps,
unless speciially designed, flash every page. It's a problem with every
e-ink based reader, from Sony to the Kindle to the Kobo.
@Aristotle10 I'm using 3.2.0.35. It's the latest version the Market will
let you install. The newer versions are for Froyo 2.2 and above. There's no
PDF support, but Whispersync is still there. You may have to do it
manually. In the book, just hit the Menu button, More, then Sync
I made a DD image of my Nook when it was factory fresh. That way no matter
what I do I can restore it. You can do the 10 reboot method but it is
extremely annoying. If you check the official XDA Developers Forum for the
there's step by step guides on backing up there.
@cool08player Which stock eInk reader allows you to both obtain and read
B&N, Kindle, Kobo, Overdrive, Project Gutenburg and online reader ebooks
all on the same device? The warranty is a good point: be sure to make a
backup of the stock firmware before rooting it.
@cool08player Sure there is. You can pull the DRM off the Overdrive, Kobo,
and Kindle books by hooking it into your computer and reformatting them. Or
you could root it, load up the apps, and it becomes a good $99 Android
e-ink reader/tablet
@13Keepers I'd rather have the Nook personally because you can do more with
it. Like I said, if rooting and such is all new and scary I'd just get the
Kindle if you're fine living in their exclusive bookstore

Thank you so much for your easy-to-follow tutorial. I had no idea how to
even start. Even though your video is 2 years old now, it got me all the
way through (of course, some of the screens are different now, and I had to
register with Adobe and such, but I just kept pausing your video until I
got caught up). It took me half an hour to go through all the steps, but
not only did you teach me this particular process, but I feel like my
entire brain has been expanded into the 21st century.
This is the perfect instructional video for downloading e-books from the
library for Kobo Touch. I was rather confused at the steps required to do
this...not much help from Kobo...and the library was somewhat helpful, but
not so much. I have used this video for the first couple of e-books I
downloaded from my local library (in a small town in Ontario)...and each &
every step was perfectly in order & correct. libsteph...thank you so very
much...couldn't have done it without you! :)
@DJMONKAY it always becomes inaccessible off your computer, but sometimes
if you don't sync your Kobo or whatever you're using, it doesn't delete off
your portable device. The library is under the assumption that you will not
have it after this time and lends a digital copy to someone else. If you
notice it hasn't been removed automatically after it says "expired" in
digital editions you are obligated under copyright law to delete it
yourself. You're welcome.
You can "return" a book by clicking on the little arrow that comes up when
you highlight or hover over the book in Digital Editions. That arrow brings
up a menu that includes return. I work at Vernon Branch of the ORL and if
you have a laptop and bring it in I'll show you how. You can have 5 from BC
libraries and 5 from ORL ebooks out at one time on each library card.
@chancat1999 You can do this with the iPad, I just showed my dad how to do
this. You will need the overdrive media console app to avoid needing
Digital Editions on your computer. Any device that lets you download the
free app and works with epub or pdf you can do it without linking to a
computer. I don't believe any of the Kobos have this ability yet.
This video was amazing, if I hadn't found this video, I would've spent
HOURS trying to figure out how to download books and it's really very
simple. You're video was soooo helpful I could not have done this without
it. It's different 'cause it's not a touch screen. I would've never figured
it out. Thank You(:
I was just about to ask, what happens, after the 7 days, but you answered
it. I was about to say, how will it delete after 7 days on your kobo... or
does it? Or does it become inaccessible? I'm just carious. I never heard of
doing this. Thanks for this information.
No }:( I think if someone took the time to read the terms and conditions,
you might find it. But that would take years.... Maybe one day I'll find
the patience to do etensive research :( But if you find a solution....
please let me know!!
Thank you so much for showing me how to do this! I got my Kobo 2 days ago,
and I've been having a little trouble with it. This video cleared
everything up! I'm definitely recommending it to anyone who is starting up
with their Kobo!
@SammyHeredia I believe so, although I haven't tried it yet myself. As long
as it takes epub or pdf the books from my library will work- the only
difference from this video would be how you plug it in to your computer.
Can you, if you have wi-fi, just get the book from your library by
downloading it on the Kobo (without having to link up to a computer)? I
havent got a Kobo yet so I dont know how it works exactly. Much appreciated
So glad I found your detailed help to download library books. I have been
struggling to work this out for days and just want to thank you for making
this information available as it has solved my problems.
Thanks so much for helping me figure this out! Very greatful! Also would
you know how to "return" a book this way, as far as I can see I can only
have 5 ebooks out at one time? We're with ORL, too.
I followed your steps, but it said that I did not have permission to copy
it!! :( I got as far as downloading it to Adobe Digital Editions, and then
it wouldn't let me copy it to my Kobo!! >:( helpz
Thanks so much for making this vid. The various vendors and the library
have not actually explained all this which I found very annoying. You
filled in the gaps. ty.
