Sounds of a Sleeper - Supercharged V6 Datsun 510
This 71 Datsun 510 has been highly modified for hillclimbs and autox competitions, and is very similar in appearance to the 510 recently featured on Jay Leno's ...
How does that work out with weight distribution - kinda heavy in the front
or anything?
I guess the slipping and sliding at that last take of is either too much
front weight or lack of traction control (left tire slipping more)?
Vid would be awesome without the NRA sticker - Seems to destroy the spirit
of that classic import, but what do I know?
+I-dont-Agree-to-Your-Terms I think I mixed up the exhaust from shifting with rubber burning on the left tire - is that a stock diff though? Would a limited slip help more? I'm just thinking of Marissa Tomei's testimony from My Cousin Vinny. Of course, those cars probably had a third of the power-weight ratio.
i've got my eye on the buick L36 3800 V6 as used in the 2000-2002 camaro.
its a series II design with short-deck block and should fit in the 510
nicely. if i can use it with a desirable trans (no cutting my girl), i
wanna do another sedan swap, but not another VG project. the V65 dizzies
are getting expensive and i'll need one if i go that route. the buick motor
is all-iron, lightweght, and will make 205/220 with a stock cam. from the
junkyard to the bluebird with a minimum of fuss and good reliabilty and
that should be adequate power for the 510. i drove my buick fr san diego to
akron and got better than 33 mpg average- with the L36 motor. maybe good
fuel economy, too.
My dream swap would have to be an exact replica of the first 510 I ever saw! I was 16 at my first Car & Coffee meet and there it was a 1971 Burnt Orange 510 with a great street setup. I got to talking to the dude and he popped the hood, and there it laid a 3.0 Yamaha V6 from a 1991 Ford Taurus SHO it had the normal mods cams , heads, intake and a tune! The dude said he was pushing 350 all motor!! But back to the point (If your build was successful) Do you think I would be able to do the same without cutting??
That Dime is awesome!!! I'm very interested in the same setup! I am
building one, now, and it came with a VG-30E. But I want more... I'd like
to ask specifics if you don't mind.
Hi, yes, I'd like to have Rebello Racing build me one of there 3.4L (VG-33 base). I'd like to ask how you set that supercharger up. I would like to go forced induction, but I haven't seen a kit for a centrifugal charger, so, I'd have to fab a kit up. would you send me pics of your brackets and such? that way I have an idea of how to do it? Thanks! or any information you are willing to share. (I haven't built or been in the 510 scene since 1996).
Thanks - It was a labor of love! Sounds like you are getting into a fun project. You'll find that even a naturally aspirated VG gets you lots of fun in a car as light as a 510. But more power is never a bad thing. What specifics are on your mind, are you planning on engine modifications? I know some great Dime forums that have extensive Q&A sections I can point you to as well, if that will help.
I think it'll look good with the South London Look, or even as a 60's
Bellflower custom. Lowered over 13" steelies and hubcaps, straight pastel
paint and stock body (no spoilers), Fishnet Recaro seats. Maybe a Rover v8
under the hood.
It is very easy to find decent non-running older Datsuns in Washington State, and they are easy to find. Any wrecking yard will sell you a non-titled shell for about $500 bucks.
I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to write that app.. put a cell phone mount in your dash with a pre determined route, and everyone's phones feeding information like the hut on a racing sim. ..when that day comes, I'll consider buying another car.
