WRONGO!!! When is oil ever thinner when its cold? The viscosity grade is
determined at 100 degrees F (212 c). According to SAE J300 standards, to be
classified as a certain viscosity, an oil is warmed to 100 degrees C (212
degrees F). It's kinematic viscosity at this temperature is measured. If it
falls within a certain range it is classified as a particular viscosity.
For instance, an SAE 30 oil must have a kinematic viscosity at 100 degrees
C of between 9.3 and 12.5 cSt (centistokes).
+robert spear In this video the words "Flow" and "Viscosity" are interchanged because the numbers on the bottle represent " theoretical " Viscosity as Flow. True viscosity is the" Rate "of change between the numbers, which is called a Viscosity Index. 10w30: the 30 represents the Flow at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, its viscosity is the resistance to change as it cools. All oils thicken as they cool, Synthetic oils have a higher viscosity index, meaning it has a greater resistance to thickening as it cools and will be thinner at 50 degrees than a conventional oil, which has a lower viscosity index or less resistance to change. A higher viscosity index is better as all oils are not at the proper Flow Rate till they reach 212 .

Hi I have decided to try my hand at Oils Water Soluble or Mixable as some
call it , no matter , I have beeb asking about Mediums and not getting much
joy . I Presume and I have been told one should never presume, That the
Medium you used 50/50 linseed oil and water (plain or Artisan) , do you use
that as a liquid clear or for thinning the oil . As I said have been asking
question on mediums like Liquid clears and liquid white and cannot get a
straight answer. Can you help ? Regards Ned
Ned, I use linseed oil to create a creamier texture and a fast drying
medium for water soluble paints as a thinner. I never use water because it
makes the paint tacky. I hope this helps.
