Conducting field research interviews in Cambodia, linguist and author, Antonio Graceffo, uses ALG concepts to communicate with an interview subject. Antonio ...
You answered one of my questions here that I asked elsewhere (it seems I
found the videos in wrong order). I am just wondering how realistic it is
not to try to speak at least the rudimentary phrases to the locals, in
everyday living. (And let's face it, you get so much better service even
with a bad language than no language at all. What are the negative effects
to the learner? Would love to read your book and learn more about the
method: I would like to learn another language before I die :-)
So my understanding is that if I lived in a country, for the first 2 months
or so, I use the point method or do business in places where I can use my
own language? That is, if I only have an access to my translator limited
hours each day? But how do I choose my translator, does s/he have to be
someone qualified and how do you gauge how much you can trust him/her
translating what actually been said?
Starting to talk, would I start with individual words or start making
sentences? How can I get sounds come out right that are strange to my
language? I know that a lot of babies babbling is to train the tongue and
throat to produce the sound of their language - and adults applause when
the baby makes a sound aching to a real word... Is is ok to try to try and
make individual sounds, e.g. ch+ng?
I guess that after 20 years of living in the country of my current second
language, not speaking (and after a couple of years not thinking) in my own
language - and still sounding like a bloody foreigner + making grammatical
mistakes a native wouldn't - is to do with the fact that I had to attempt
to speak the language as soon as possible?
@oakstrong1 the important thing about ALG is, you need to listen to as much
of the foreign language, with context, as possible and refrain from
speaking it till you are ready. dealing with your translators and friends
is the same as dealing with anyone else. tell them what you need and make
sure they help you. and remember to pay them.
@oakstrong1 As I said, this is an excellent way of learning. If you want to
learn, you need to create this situation for yourself. If you don't, you
can't learn. Yes, people want to learn English, but you need to just make
demands of them or pay them. I always pay my teachers, then I teach them
how to teach me.
@KhmerBayon I explained in the video that the learning method is to listen,
but not speak the foreign language, until your pronunciation is perfect,
which only comes from months and months of constant listening. That was
thoroughly explained in the video. You claim to speak English, why didn't
you listen?
@oakstrong1 If you have done your listening, the right sounds will come
out. as for speaking in words or sentences. Are you and adult? how do you
speak your native language? in words or sentences? so you must speak the
foreign language the same way. ALG doesn't believe in words.
I accept what you are saying, but what are the chances of doing that when
you live in a country and don't have a translator or a Khmer friend is
happy to play along... ? (Most are too keen to miss a chance of practising
their English.) Any advice on how to overcome the problem?
@oakstrong1 if you want to become fluent, it is better NOT to try and speak
the language at all until you have completed your 800 hours of listening.
in the case of khmer, i only speak when i need to, if my translator is not
around, otherwise i only use my khmer listening.
@oakstrong1 generally if you are being true to ALG principles you will know
when you are ready. but remember it wont be till after 800 hours of
listening. until then, if you are tempted to talk, ask yourself, do i sound
like someone who has had 800 hours of listening.
Thanks for being so patient with me brooklynmonk1. I have one more stupid
question, if you don't mind: how do I know when I'm ready? What should I
expect to sound like when I first try to communicate in the new language? I
mean in terms of pronunciation and grammar.
@Ivanchapimuay no it takes years to learn a language. i studied khmer at
school in cambodia for three months only but then i was in the field doing
interviews a lot and that is where my listening improved. but i dont speak
as well as i listen.
Trying to avoid the same happening again, how can best explain to the
people that I am not being rude by not trying to talk with them, for those
times I cannot have a translator with me? Get someone to write a note to
explain perhaps?
How do you train your teacher to teach you, how easy is it? Is it just a
question of explaining your objective and then reminding him of this, e.g.
that s/he should not speak your native language to you at all, even if
s/she can?

US Initiative Helps Chams Retain Language and Culture (Cambodia news in Khmer)
A US-funded cultural preservation project among Cambodia's Cham Muslims has helped students learn to read and write in their traditional language and script.
They cannot and must not forget their language and history. They all must be
taught their tragic history as well, the lost of their homeland and the
anihilation of their people, tradition, heritage and culture. They all must be
reminded of what they once were as Cham people. There was a time when they
had their own homeland and thriving community. But today they are fully
accepted as Khmer citizens and Cambodia love our Cham citizens, many Khmer
had converted to Islam and taken a Cham wives.
oly stupid Khmer go to married with chame and you never get out from
fucking lady .They not how to used curse evil spirit on you .some of them
good chame but most of them bad They like to lived away from other
community wich is a real khmer and they like to ceparat and diffirent chame
want to have their own land who ever love champ need to look very close
..to the futher
I believe that the Champ people in Cambodia, they are originally Cambodian,
there'are many Champ people left from Pol Pot era. The Champ people were
not lot lived in Cambodia before the war 1975. Now most of the Khmer people
pretend to be Champ, and pretend to be Chinese and Vietnamese. They are
'KHMER'.
We never had any problems with the Cham population in Cambodia before until
the communists khmer rouge, communists vietnam and now communist hun sen
took over. The communists killed off alot of Cham population and back in
vietnam the Cham population lost their entire homeland...
Muslim in Cambodia are very good people. They treated us better than hun
sen,the viet congs, the thais and the Khmer Rouge. The Muslim in Cambodia had
alway co-existed peacefully with fellow citizens. We never had any problem
before and we dont intend to have any in the future.
I applaud the U.S for reaching out to the Cham population in Cambodia in
friendship and the Cham people of Cambodia will not be the first to refuse
an outreached hands of friendship !! Islam is about humble..
Surely, US's policy about helping Cham im Cambodia due of the US want to
take sympathy from the Islamist World only -> this is a cheated policy of
the US.
