Part 3 of Discovery Real Time Wheeler Dealers program on the MX-5. A great review on the greatest sports car ever built. It tells you how buy second hand, what ...
Cars come from the factory with a big air box usually, which is specially
designed to reduce the hissing sound of the air intake. When you fit a pod
filter or similar filter it makes the intake much louder than usual. All
the plastic bits the manufacturers put in to make it quieter also slow down
the airflow, not to mention they usually use very cheap filters which
restrict airflow even more. Pod filters are usually made with high quality
breathable fabric, and also have much more surface area
The air flow meter provides restriction above 6000RPM (from dyno testing),
meaning that no matter what air filter you have, the AFM will cause
induction choking. The stock system is actually well designed, it uses
Helmhotz resonance to improve low end torque where a flat spot would be. So
yes there is more surface area but induction is far more complicated that
most people realise and sometimes it's just best to leave it alone unless
you really know what you're doing!
Well the secondary resonator is located just before the throttle body. The
mid section between the throttle body and air box is free flowing. The only
real gain to be had is to have a modified induction system drawing air from
the windscreen cowl. The 'Randall' designed intake utilises this method.
Reducing intake temperatures is the best option here.
Its cheaper for the manufacturer to make. Why fit an expensive quality
filter on a shitty Corolla, made for commuting in traffic every day? Why
design a car and let it be loud and annoying to the driver? Use your brain
a bit man. And, I have 2 MX5s, one with a K&N pod filter and one with a
standard airbox, trust me, it makes a huge difference.
some people do not like hearing throttle body noise thats why they dont do
it yeah they would love to put one on them BUT they think of the customer
and say well what if an old couple were t buy this they certainly wouldnt
want the noise or some bitchy lady that wants nothing but a car that gets
god fuel mileage and rides very quiet
@ 04:00 If that aftermarket air filter is so good and is not just a
marketing gimmick to depart you with your hard earned cash. Why do no car
manufacturers install them as standard? I think the car manufacturers who
spent years of research design and development of their own engine know
best.
Yup, the weird little box shape halfway through the induction pipe does
exactly what you mentioned. The factory tuned it. Probably would've been
better off using a high flow panel filter in the stock airbox. The merits
of K&N replacement filters are a whole other debate.
this episode is on streetfire in full, google wheeler dealers mx5, but in
short. window out. grind down, cut some out and weld in replacement
sections, and treat the non serious rust. paint the whole window surround,
refit window
I don't believe for one minute that after years of development EVERY
manufacturer will deliberately fit a poor performing air filter. It goes to
show that the manufacturers found that K&N style induction kit isn't worth
it.
So why do performance cars such as the BMW M5 in this series come with a
normal filter? Even our mighty MX-5's didn't come with a K&N pod and hey
were not designed for taking the kids to school in commuter traffic :-).
Not quite, and that headlight kit currently retails at 580 quid at mx5
parts. not sure of the cost back then but don't think it would have done
their budget any good.
Not even Ferrari's come fitted with K&N style pods. If a Ferrari 458 Italia
comes fitted with a paper panel filter as standard, surely that sure tell
you something.
on 1:32 you can see the face lifted nice sporty mr2 with half the way open
head lights (japnes style ) on that shot . thats what they should done on
there mr2...
just look at the surface area on the filter. Its far bigger on a pod. I
might do a video demo of the difference this weekend if I got time, my
mates got a dyno
Yep, seen the episode already and had it fixed with a new window since it
already cracked.
