Medical School Series: Getting Into Medical School (How We Got Into Medical School)
Thanks for watching :) We'll be creating more videos about medical school and the process of getting in. Leave us suggestions on what you would like to see.
Great video guys! I am a freshman at UCI and I'm planning to go to med
school. My question is regarding extracurriculars. Besides studying and
research, the only thing I'm truly interested in is music. I will be
joining the on-campus band, possibly doing a additional major in jazz. I
don't know how much leadership I can get in music. Do I really need to do
things I don't like just to look good on med school apps? I want to just be
myself.
I'm in eighth grade and will be attending debakey high school for medical
professions next year. It is a public preparatory school in houston that
you must get accepted into to attend. It offers many special credits and
rotations at Memorial Hermann Houston. Obviously this puts me at an
advantage because of the experience i'll have going into college, however,
I will be in a class of about 150 geniuses and I don't know how reasonable
it is to assume that i'll be in the top 20% of my graduating class. If I
want to apply to a large public college (such as UCLA or UC Berkeley) do
you think my situation would put me at an advantage or disadvantage when
the admissions officers look at my application?
Please respond.
+Reese Neal If you want to attend a public Texas university you either need to be in the top 10 percent of your class or have a higher than average SAT, which shouldn't be difficult for a Debakey student. At least until now it has been easy for out-of-state applicants to get into a UC because California schools want the higher tuition dollars that out-of-state students are required to pay. About forty percent of the students accepted at UCLA were out-of-state but most decided to not attend. Here is an article about a Debakey student who graduated from Johns Hopkins with a 3.98 in neuroscience and now attends Yale Medical School on scholarship. //www.nairaland.com/2308546/nigerian-top-graduating-student-john
Asian are nerdy, their upbring creates the environment to get into med.
school. You think some urban drug infested gang affiliated ghetto hood kid
can make it? they've gotta watch thier own backs first, not knowing when
they might catch a bullet or get mobbed. Asians have that community
support: tutoring, study groups etc.
I know it may be to early to be thinking about stuff like this but I just
wondered if there's anything I could do to better prepare myself. Im only a
junior in high school and I was wondering if you recommended anything
before college and med school.

Hi. I would like your advice. I am currently working on my Masters in
Social Work but now I would like go into the field of medicine. I am
currently 30 and a mother of one. Does this sound a little far fetched to
want to start so "late" in life. Thank you for your advice.
It is not far fetched at all. You just have to be certain it is what you want to do. The journey to becoming a Medical Doctor is very challenging! Before you get on that road, make sure you and your child are ready for the challenges ahead. Long nights, emotional stress, sometimes financial challenges. It is not an easy road. BUT, if it is what you want, and you are serious about it...then go for it!!! We have had a few members of DiverseMedicine ask very similar questions and some are also considering Physician Assistant profession. Explore all your options and once you decide which one you want to pursue, go for it!

I am so confused. if I do two years at a community college, then transfer
to a university and do two years there, does that not count as four years
towards a bachelors degree?
I was planning on get my ADN then doing bridge to my BSN then applying to
med school, however they are both 18 month courses. Does that mean I need
to go to a 4 year college to get my BSN directly to get into med school? Or
will the BSN suffice?
+Andrea Tooley so i couldn't take my pre requisites at a community college?? like my general biology's, physics, chemistry, and organic chemistry?? and then transfer after my sophomore yr and take the harder sciences at a state university?? lie genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology?
Hey Andrea I had a question I am currently a sophomore and I'm attending a
magnet high school that offers four years of learning intro to medicine and
the last year we get to shadow at a hospital will this help me in the
future?

I have a question: can someone take (and pass) the MCAT, then wait a year
or so to go into medical school and use that MCAT score later on, or do you
have to go into MS right after you took the exam?
+wesley ogilvie It depends on the school. Some schools will only allow a three year period for example. I suggest looking at the FAQ for the medicals school(s) you have in mind.
thank you so much for your advices! I want to become a physician however
I'm not confident about my learnings abilities (bad at memorizing stuff
fast). i'm a B student but im terrible at chemistry and math :( do you
think I have a chance??
Hi! Thank you for sharing your experience it really puts everything into

done so?

Hi tomiwa007, I HIGHLY recommend Khanacademy and PatrickJMT videos.
Khanacademy for science and PatrickJMT for math. It helped me make
exceptional grades! DO NOT let ANYONE discourage you, whether they are a
relative, teacher or even a "friend". Just work VERY hard, you will likely
burn out several times but just keep going. Relax for a while then keep at
it. Burn-out is normal. Try making awesome grades at a community college if
HS grades aren't high. Volunteer. Seek a mentor! You can do it! :)
what i find hypocritical is that if these schools look at how much empathy
doctors have, WHY does EVERY SINGLE DOCTOR i visit hurry me out of his
office within 3 minutes? i am not joking. every doctor wants his patients
out within minutes. i also don't see any doctors helping any communities
here in new york city other than padding their own pockets. there is so
much lies and hypocrisy within the industry. it's nothing more than a
business.
Sorry to be a downer, but its EVERY pre-meds dream to get into Harvard/John
Hopkins/UCSF or some other top university, but the reality is that even
with near perfect stats and extracurriculars, it's still incredibly
difficult. Just do the best you can in college, and when it comes time to
apply be open to more than just Ivys. Whether you go to Harvard or the
University of Nowhere, you'll end up becoming a doctor =)
It's my dream to get into Harvard Med School someday. How hard would you
say it is to get in there? all my life i have never gotten below a 3.5 gpa,
i volunteer at my local hospital, and i do have hobbies outside the medical
community.... is it possible i have a chance, do you think??
@tomiwa007 Hi im a highschool studentin Canada in grade 12. I worked
incredibly hard on stdying for a test, but still did not perform well. I
feel like, if I cant be top in my class, how am I going to get ino
medicine, Can u make a video on how you study please. It would mean ALOT>
No prob, i figures it would be. Harvard is Ivy League, after all, and a
beautiful campus. i figured it'd be pretty darn difficult X) Thanks for the
advice btw. at the end of the day, all i really want is to help people, so
it doesnt really matter where i go :) Thanks^^
I love emergency medicine. I enjoy helping people in their most desperate
state especially when they are in pain or sometime crashing. I save lives
daily! its exciting and I enjoy the fact that I see instant results.
If I have a 3.2 to 3.3 GPA but really do well on my MCAT, let's see 34 to
35...Do you think I still have a chance to get into DO school! or should i
go for an IMG school?
