This is my first video review. I wanted to review a product that had very little attention here on Youtube. Oh yeah, actual Rockwell on this axe is 52-56.
I own them all. To start with, 8 Velvicuts so in that direction I support
more jobs than you. And I also own the Swedish companies Gransfors Bruks,
Huqsvarna etc. And I can tell you that the Velvicuts dont even come close
to the Huqsvarna which is less than 50% price wise. I won't even mention
the Gransfors Bruks because they belong to another dimension. Being
produced in US is not an excuse for inferior quality and Yes the Velvicuts
are not well forged as they do hold a good edge. Companies throw the made
in US as they see fit nowadays. The production of Velvicuts is completely
automated and quality check has been problematic. Is absolutely no excuse
to be a bad batch as you said in the video. Anyone that knows just a little
about axes will tell you to close your eyes and take the Gransfors Bruks
and throw the rest. All the people that claim that the Velvicuts are the
best thing since sliced bread are liars and deceivers. It works for you
because you don't know shit about axes.
"dogg", wow that's great that you own 8 velvicuts! Your vast experience and
knowledge is impressive. It's a little disappointing that you feel so
negatively about "Made in the USA", perhaps you have had some bad
experiences, perhaps contact with Council Tool with some suggestions as to
how they could improve on their product(being a manufacturer, they might
know "shit" about the axes they make). I'm sure they would value highly
experienced and knowledgeable input about the tools they make and how they
could make them better. Have a Merry Christmas .
I have one of these and honestly feel it is a bit more versatile than a
Swedish make. Now, the swedish axe's profile lends itself to better
chopping, but not by anything remarkable. This chops almost as well but
splits noticeably better and, I find it more comfortable and controllable
for choking up and doing fine work. Good tabletop!
So far in my use of this axe I would have to say that it is an excellent
tool. I have carved, chopped , and split with it and it has performed very
well. As far as edge retention, it holds an edge very well and is easy to
touch up and keep " shaving sharp". Couldn't be happier with my investment.
Well, your video has done exactly what you intended. I was shopping for one
of the "big three" names from Sweden. I would gladly pay a little more and
support The USA. Thanks for giving us a chance to see it in detail.
I've had issues with it in the cold. Steel becomes pretty brittle and chips
pretty easily. I have had two pretty nasty glances with the axe that almost
ended in injury as a result.
I just finished watching a few John Neeman Autine Forest Axe reviews.
Are they worth $350/avg + a six month weight? Yeah...yeah they are.
But me being me and me I thought to myself, "But I can make my own."
I have a few vintage heads laying around waiting to be re-hafted, but now,
I want a heavier headed 24-28" axe. Overkill for a Boy's Axe, sure, but I
like the way those 3#+ Autines handled.
Honestly Leif? I didn't see much difference between the Autine and your
"College" Axe. I'd bet it's just as good. I'll take one of my heads and get
to
work on it. That's some really nice work you did with that Jersey.
BTW, I've probably seen this video over a dozen times. Makes me miss home.
I'm from Westchester, downstate from you, but I'm headin' back there in
about
a week from Appalachia.
That Hudson Bay Velvicut is one sweet little axe. I purchased the Council
Tool regular axe and it was a piece of crap. Nice handle that was ruined by
some idiot that had no idea what he was doing. One side was nicely beveled,
the other side was flat with a sharp edge. The blade had huge grinding
divots and one side was ground flat at the edge. Completely ruined the
edge. Don't believe what they say about quality control--it is not true.
Find a local dealer and inspect before you purchase.
I enjoy your videos. I'd love to see more. I agree with what you said, You
don't necessarily need an axe that big, but they're not meant just to be
put in storage. Use'em they're tools. Learn to use them and enjoy them.
Personally I feel working with an axe whether chopping and splitting wood
or even just carrying one on a hike gives me a true feeling of tranquility.
And if you ever do decide the axe is too big I can give you an address
where to send it. lol That jersey is beautiful.
Hey, thanks for this vid I couldn't agree with you more. Gear and tools
should be "fun"ctional and personal there is a place and time for every
tool and I think all of the negative banter in this venue is really silly
and unnecessary . I like your videos because I learn from watching you do
what you do. And I don't care what anyone says a man's skill with an ax is
in the final cut that is how you tell who's using them and who's not. I
also am with you on the weight issue. Thanks
Hey Guy's, I purchased a Small axe/ hatchet, 6 months ago, in an Army
Surplus Store in Midleton, County Cork..(Republic of Ireland) For 5euros
(About 6 US Dollars) ..I Sharpened the Edge, Oiled it, and have taken care
of it, and it serves me very well, Yes, it will cut paper, but I purchased
it to chop and split, I think too many people get carried away with brand
names and the way your kit looks/ costs, .Anyway, I enjoyed your Vid, and
will keep watching. ..Tony.
I hate when people critisize what you bring. Individual choice based on
budget and desire and need. There is no right or wrong beyond what works
for you. That camera is great. Color and contrast beautiful. You are one of
the few people I have seen use their fire steel correctly...most people
pull back against the striker instead of holding the magnesium stationary.
What brand of pants are you wearing? Thank You for the Vid.
Beautiful country, I agree with what you said, I'm not into axes/hatchet at
all, I own a few Gerber axes/hatchet but they only get used around the
house or base camping. I would never put a lot money into an ax just
because I don't use them that much but like you said there's people that
love the things and who cares if you want to put YOUR money into one. Good
video, I found it from BushcraftUSA.
Really nice vid! :) Enjoyed it alot! I liked the ''rant'' too, and I think
you are right. People read, watch and talk too much and do too little.
''They'' think about saving weight as if it was a year long expedition or
something, when it should be about having fun and just enjoying your time
in the woods. :) Great axes in the vid btw, would love to own both of them!
I have a jersey style axe head with an M marking on it as well i searched
it out an it says that its a Plumb co. Axe. Least thats what i read about
it. Its a versatile antique i love mine i shortend the handle just a bit an
shaved a lil weight off sanding as well its my
User axe for sure i choose it over my norlunds saddle cruiser another
awesome antique tool!!
Skogkniv, would you be able to recommend an axe with a 1.5lb head and a
19"-ish handle? I'm looking at the Wetterlings Large Hunting Axe but I
figured you'd know if there are some US competitors. I have the Council
Hudson Bay at 26" and like it very much but wanted to get something smaller
to add to my collection that was just a bit larger than a hatchet.
I agree, you should practice with all of your tools. Try different options
and see what you like. My preference in colder weather is a double bit
cruiser axe and a case stockman. In summer I replace the cruiser with a
hatchet. I have found this to be my favorite tool combinations. Carry what
you want, in the end its your ass not mine. Great vid by the way
The reflection of the trees in the Coffee was amazing! I find your
photography somehow calming yet energizing. How is this possible? It may be
the music but I don't think so. Shots of the lizard/salamander were pretty
cool. I have never seen those before. All your stuff is great. PS> The Axe
was/is big but it can do big work. Where's the problem?
I think you missed my point. It shouldn't matter to anyone what you use or
spend on your gear. If it gets the job done who cares how someone else
spends their money. I have many axe heads in my collection that did not
cost much, and were rehandled by me. I also have a couple GB axes that were
not cheap. It doesn't matter. Thanks for watching.
Man what a great video!!! When I lived in Hoosick Falls, I used to go to
the Adirondacks and VT's Green Mountains all of the time. I really miss it.
Now I live across the state from you. ( West of Rochester) Don't get out
that way much any more. Your videos are such good therapy the watch! God
bless you both!
very good video really nice to just see what you do in nature and being a
maker of videos myself i genuinely couldnt care less about armchair
bushcrafters or keyboard warriors haha if i want to buy an expensive axe i
will why base out gear on someone who never actually uses gear themselves,
take care Mike
Rooster Mod Bushcraft Axe.... Rooster
I took a Boys Axe and modified the head into a bushcraft style head...here I am testing it on some Eastern White Pine... https://www.facebook.com/RoosterMod ...
It reminds me of the Firestone Carving Axe a lot. I was gifted one last year and passed it on to a friend, but man that thing was sweet. The actual Firestone iteration had hit & miss quality, but the steel was scary sharp. It's in good hands now where it's appreciated. BTW, I'm a tradesman myself and I have to say your mastery of that axe and working that tenon was sweet. You make it look easy, but I know how hard that really is. Not only that, it's a testament to the craftsmanship of your mod to that axe. Great great stuff. #ThumbsUp
+Big Brown This particular axe is not for sale...but a few more might be available at a later date... thanks for the interest... Peace, Rooster :)
Condor Axe disappointment
just got the Condor Michigan double bit axe. This is a 1.75lb 1060 carbon steel axe head on a 24" handle. Firstly the handle was not acceptable. It appears to be ...
I heard the one on Pathfinder Store was junk as well. In defense of the bad
handles. I was a professional wildland firefighter for nearly 10 seasons.
The USFS used junk handles. Not sure where you heard they didn't. How you
use the axe depends on if you break the handle. Sure bad grain gives you a
disadvantage, but if used correctly.....you can get years our of twisted
grain or less than perfect grain alignment.
+MrOldclunker I must not have been very clear, but that was my point. USFS doesn't require much of the handles, and this wouldn't pass because of the grain runoff in the middle. I know USFS doesn't care about grain alignment or heart wood. The odds of me breaking the handle are pretty slim, but for the $15 it will cost for a quality handle from house handle, I'd rather have the piece of mind.
