HVAC Service Training- Condenser Fan Motor Replacement

Hey Hvac guy, I have a condensor unit that's had a new motor installed and
keeps shutting off . Why would it shutdown? I also go outside and cool the
coils and motor down and it will run again, why, is there a temp pressure
switch that's killing the motor, by the way the previous owners mounted it
on blocks in the dirt lol.....and its hot here, please any feedback would
help, I do AC on cars all day long but never touhced a house.
My AC stopped working today. The fan does not turn on, but makes a humming
noise, which makes me think that its a bad capacitor. The other problem is
that it keeps tripping the circuit breaker. Would a bad motor or cap cause
fuse breaker to trip. I replaced the circuit breaker in the box to rule
that out. Any ideas?
Great Video, just need to mention color of wires, because there was fourn
on mine From Motor green, black, brown and red, on Unit was yellow, black
blue.........other than that very easy, just have to same color is no
problem.......
I have a question. My central air is blowing air through my house but its
not cold. The fan is not turning as fast as it should and can be kick
started by using something to start it with. What could be my problem?
yeah beginners have those testing tools,SMH! A beginner wouldn't even know
what an ohm is, not to mention how to use a tester. Back to the drawing
board on knowing what an actual beginner is!
tomfoolery6: completely agree. Additionally, havcrepairguy states 30-50
ohms are typical resistance for fan motor but does not say what "bad"
resistance readings are.
This was very helpful. Saves me alot of worries, thanks.

Basic HVAC Video Series: How to Change a Condenser Fan Motor
//tandnservices.com In this video I show how to change a condenser fan motor.
years ago I lived in Myrtle Beach and I'm familiar with the fire ants,I
live in Ohio now,I have a customer,a Marathon gas station, they have the
walk in cooler condensing units out behind the building, they have these
small fast brown ants that leave these 2" red welts that itch like poison
ivy for 2 weeks. This guy is from India I told him to spray a little
gasoline around the condensing units to make it toxic enough for the ants
to relocate,he asked me if he should light the gas on fire.Wow.
Great video Ralph. If I get my video up soon from last May, I go over the 3
wire to 4 wire hook up as well. I always match rpm, hz, phase and volts.
Then either match hp or go up 1 size hp only. That will always keep your
amp rating in line where it needs to be. I also match motor frame size to
ensure it is correct length. The frame size of old motors will be on the
motor data tag. I hadn't seen Dallas's video when I made mine, but now do
the pvc conduit also. Take care, Brett
My old Goodman unit, which died due to a hacked installation before I
bought my house had the run cap fail causing the motor to stop. The motor
got so hot it cooked the grease in the bearings! I was able to save it by
taking the motor apart and repacking the grease in the bearings. The year
after, the compressor shorted to ground due to the hacked install. Now I
have a Payne unit that is 100% proper and works way better! They guy who
installed my Payne reminds me of you. ;-)
I charge $90 more for the Sureswitch. I give customer option for both but
explain the benefits of the Sureswitch and they always buy it. I haven't
had any price complaints yet. Same with the Turbos. I charge about $80 more
for the Turbo 200 and just over $100 more for the Turbo 200X. I've found as
long as you give them the option plus explain the difference in the
warranty (1year vs 5 year) most will willingly pay extra for a better
product. Hope this helps:)
Here's a good thought for techs to remember. The amp draw rating is the
amount of work that motor can do. It was designed for the unit it was
placed in. You lower that amp draw and the load/tonnage/work is still there
in the unit.......that motor will over amp trying to perform that amount of
work. It ain't rocket science, so keep teaching them. Folks need to know
what amp draw means and what causes it.Take care, Brett
Emerson Sureswitch will take care of the ant problem and also give you some
extra benefits like time delay on high and low voltage side, brownout
protection and sealed relay on board to prevent insects damaging contacts.
It's all I use now and I love them! Also, I switched to Turbo capacitors.
Less I have to carry on truck and 5 year warranty. Much better quality and
made in the USA! I enjoy your videos!
Like the conduit trick for the reversing wires, and the way you wired it up
so you didn't have to use a separate capacitor was helpful. I went to
replace a capacitor with a rescue motor in it, and had to use the separate
capacitor (secured with strapping, not dangling loose!) because I didn't
know that little bit of info about using the brown wire only. Learned
something on Youtube, imagine that! :)
Hey ESDI, I'm glad you were able to get it going by repacking the bearings,
we can't do that because once we do work on it like that we marry it. There
are some customers that would then in turn say I messed up their motor if
it didn't work 2 weeks later. Glad you got up and running in the end
though. If your guy reminds you of me you better keep him around!!!!
Hey Paltech, you will be glad you use the conduit or sealtite especially if
there are 2 unit's next to each other and someone else has changed the
motor in the other one and just strapped the wires up. yours will look 10
times better and most time people wont even notice it being there.
Hey Brett, I have been to supply house's where they tried to sell me a
motor with lower amps and told me it was because it was more efficient, and
when I told them about amp draw and horse power they then said wow it's no
wonder we get so many motors back for warranty!!!!
Hey Tom, I thought the conduit trick was a smart ideal when I saw it, so I
use it all the time now. I showed the 3 wire connection because someone had
ask me about it and I figured that there were a lot of people who didn't
know as well.
Hey Michael, how do your customers react to the price difference in the
sure switch compared to a contactor or that of the turbo? I've thought
about switching over to the turbo but have been worried about price for the
customer.
When an ant is electrocuted it releases a chemical that says "danger here,
kill it". The other ants think they are attacking a threat to the colony
and rush right in. They get electrocuted and release chemicals.
Hey Terry, the old motor was a little shorter then the new one. That's the
only bad part about using the aftermarket motors. If they get to long it
will mess with the airflow and really mess you up.
Hey Kowboy, I thought about using the sure switch, but I talked to someone
who had bought it and hasn't been able to sell it because most customers
don't want to pay the extra cost of it.
Oops......could you have used one rod from the old motor .. Run into a
similar deal with the 825 rpm ... Using a 1075 ran for about 10 minute then
it would just stop ...Lesson learned!!!
i think the ants may be after some that silver which on a contacts, i wish
a copper thieves lifes would end like ants does when they try to mess with
a unit.
I do the same thing and it has worked for me.All I can do is give my
customer a choice.
