This video is a step by step guide on how to configure user home folders in Windows Server 2008 R2. It also includes creating a hidden share, setting ...
Hi, thanks for your video, but can we automate this process with Group
Policy ("Computer Configuration/System/User Profiles/Set user home
folder")? I've tried this, but it only worked with Domain Admins (not
Domain Users). I also tried to log on as Domain Users and access the Shared
Folder and Create a Folder there and it worked, but it can't created
automatically unless the user is registered as Domain Admins. Is there
anything that I missed?
+ittaster In group policy, when specifying the user home folder path, check you are using %logonuser% rather that %username% as you would in AD users and computers.
+ittaster I'm sorry, I don't really understand what that mean, do you mean I log on as domain users to one of domain computers and type that in command prompt?
+ittaster I've checked the CREATOR OWNER has full permissions in the security tab, and I've tried to add it in the sharing advanced permissions, but still not worked for domain users. Actually the most confusing, when I logged on as domain users, I can access the root of the shared folder and created a folder there but it won't created automatically.
+Henoch Setiadi Hi, Take a look at the permissions set on the root share, creator owner permission is needed for non admins to create folders, but care must be taken with permissions to prevent users from browsing the root share etc. An alternative solution you may want to consider is folder redirection.
John, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Very good video We use a script
to create many users at once. Is there a way to set the home folder setting
for many users at once? Would it be poor technique to select all the users,
right click, then set the settings?
+bsdmbeaumont Hi, yes, it's fine to create multiple home folders, by highlighting the new users in bulk, right click, and in the user properties set the home folder in the normal way ' \\server\share\%username%'. You could consider doing in it using GPOs also. Many thanks for your comments and I hope this helps.Jon
Well explained thumbs up
Any idea about how to create multiple home directory for one user. I need
to provide three home directory shares with different permissions to those
directory for every users
This is a great tutorial but I was looking for a way of setting a certain
quota for users (3 gb max) and also a way of doing this for all users at
once rather than each one individually. My OUs' have 30+
+Ashraf A. Ismail Hi, I'm glad you liked the tutorial. Take a look at Quota Templates & Auto Apply Quotas in File Server Resource Manager.Hope this helpsJon
